PULLMAN, Wash. - Sun Devil Women's Golf completed the first of three days at the 2024 Pac-12 Championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

No. 12 Arizona State (+11/299) is tied for fifth place at the 11-team event after the first round. ASU is led by junior Grace Summerhays, who opened with a 72 (E), tying her for sixth place in the individual standings. Not far behind is her teammate Beth Coulter (+1/73), as the 2023 Pac-12 Silver medalist is once again having success in this competition. Both Sun Devils sit just three strokes off the overall lead in a crowded top of the leaderboard, with Washington State's Madelyn Gamble and USC's Catherine Park each firing a 70 (-2) to set the pace.

Following the conclusion of day one, No. 1 Stanford holds the overall lead after posting a 286 (-2). They are the only team who managed to shoot under par, as the conditions were difficult due to the wind and cold weather. A total of five players shot under par, an indication of the tough set up the golfers had to face in the first round. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team finds themselves five strokes ahead of Arizona with two days remaining - as they attempt to secure the Territorial Cup Series point - awarded to the program who finishes highest at the Pac-12 Championship. The second round will begin at 9:00 AM MST for Arizona State, with a new golfer teeing-off every ten minutes on hole 1. Pac-12 Network will be providing coverage throughout the week, with a daily recap highlight show airing the morning after each round. Live scoring for all three days of the Pac-12 Championship will be provided by Golfstat.

QUOTABLES
"We got out to a fast start and played great through eight holes, but then hit a snag on 18 which led to some struggles on our backside," Coach Farr-Kaye reflected. "The conditions were very difficult with the wind chill in the 40s all day. It never really warmed up past that."

"The wind was sustaining up to 20 MPH and would gust of to 30 MPH, about a two-to-three club difference, which is really hard to judge," Coach Farr-Kaye added. "I thought we managed that well on the front nine and then just didn't do as well with it on the back."

"Grace (Summerhays) really hung in there leading us off," Coach Farr-Kaye mentioned. "Beth had one rough hole, but didn't let that effect her the rest of the way."

"These were very different conditions from yesterday, so we had to adjust today on this golf course," Coach Farr-Kaye concluded. "I think that we will be in good shape tomorrow with conditions projected to improve. The wind will still be a factor, but we learned a lot today."

THE FORMAT
Fifty-four holes of stroke play golf over the three days of competition shall decide the Pac-12 Conference Team and Individual Women's Golf Champion. Each team may enter five (5) players for a competition round. Now that it is postseason play, a team may substitute a sixth player for any member of the team prior to a round. The four players with the lowest score on a team for any 18-hole round shall constitute the scoring members of the team for that round and the team with the lowest total combined score for all rounds shall be the team champion.

THE COURSE
Home to the Washington State Men's and Women's Golf programs, Palouse Ridge Golf Course will host the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship. The Par 72 course is set up at 6,324 yards.  It lies between WSU's football facility, Martin Stadium, and the Pullman–Moscow Regional Airport. Designed by John Harbottle III back in 2008, the course has a rating of 75.4 with a slope rating of 140. It also hosted the 2012 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship, when Giulia Molinaro (T2nd) and Daniela Ordonez (T5th) recorded Top-10 finishes.

TERRITORIAL CUP SERIES POINT
The highest finisher between Arizona State and Arizona at this event will be awarded a critical Territorial Cup Series point.

HISTORY AT PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
No team has enjoyed more success at the Pac-10/12 Women's Golf Championships than Arizona State. Their 13 individual champions are six more than any other team, while their eight team championships are tied for first. Most recently, Olivia Mehaffey claimed the 2019 Individual Championship by coming back from four strokes down on the final day. The Sun Devils last one as a team back in 2009 on their way to the program's seventh of eight NCAA Championships, with Coach Farr-Kaye serving as an Assistant Coach that year.

Legendary Sun Devil Women's Golf Head Coach Linda Vollstedt could be considered the queen of the Pac-10/12 Championships. Her teams won it a total of six times, including the first two in 1987 & 1988. Later in her career, Arizona State ran off four straight titles during their dominant run in the mid-90s, a feat that has never been matched since. ASU has three Top-3 finishes at the conference championships under Coach Farr-Kaye, finishing third in 2016, 2019, and 2021.
