ALBUQUERQUE - Sun Devil Women's Golf completed their first tournament of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday at UNM Championship Golf Course.

Arizona State finished in third place in their return to the McGuire Invitational, beating out 13 teams in the initial event of the 2023-24 campaign. It was a balanced effort that helped the Sun Devils to an impressive performance over the two days, as four individuals finished in the Top-20.

Ashley Menne led the way for the Maroon & Gold, appearing to be in midseason form on her way to a sixth place finish. Grace Summerhays put together a strong effort in order to tie for 14th. Patience Rhodes and Paula Schulz-Hanssen joined them in the Top-20, with the pair finishing tied for 17th. All six Sun Devils earned valuable experience that will be critical for the rest of the 2023-24 season. Arizona State returns home briefly before hitting the road again for the Mason Rudolph Invitational, hosted at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Tennessee from Sept. 22-24.

ROUND BREAKDOWN

Ashley Menne (-5/211/T6th)

Delivered an extremely consistent performance throughout the two days, including a strong final round. Starting on the 18th hole due to a shotgun start, she avoided a bogey until the second-to-last hole. She was -2 through 16 holes, solidifying her the top finishing Sun Devil. Recorded birdies on two of her final four holes, securing her spot in the Top-10

BIRDIES (3): 3rd Hole (Par 3; 150 yards), 14th Hole (Par 5; 508 yards), 17th Hole (Par 4; 343 yards)

Grace Summerhays (-1/215/T14th)
Put the finishing touches on another excellent outing. Bounced back from a slow start with a birdie on her fourth hole, part of a -1 stretch of nine holes during her round. Birdies on two of her final three holes, including 18, secured her a spot in the Top-15.

BIRDIES (3): 4th Hole (Par 4; 372 yards), 16th Hole (Par 3, 149 yards), 18th Hole (Par 5; 475 yards)

Patience Rhodes (+1/217/T17th)
Proved she belonged in her Sun Devil debut, immediately registering a Top-20 finish in a field of 93. Erased an opening-hole double bogey thanks to two birdies during a three-hole stretch on the front nine. Found her groove on the back nine, ending with a birdie on 18 which made her even over her final nine holes.

BIRDIES (3): 3rd Hole (Par 3; 150 yards), 5th Hole (Par 4; 370 yards), 18th Hole (Par 5; 475 yards)

Paula Schulz-Hanssen (+1/217/T17th)
Continued the momentum established from a breakout freshman campaign, notching another Top-20 finish. Enjoyed the best counting round of any Sun Devil today, shooting a 71 (-1) to move up the leaderboard. Despite starting three-over on her first two holes, she caught fire midway through her round. Five birdies over a 12-hole stretch proved to be the difference, as she carded her second straight round under par.

BIRDIES (5): 7th Hole (Par 4; 375 yards), 8th Hole (Par 3; 139 yards), 15th Hole (Par 4; 341 yards), 16th Hole (Par 3, 149 yards), 18th Hole (Par 5; 475 yards)

Beth Coulter (+2/218/T24th)
Showed flashes of the form that helped her finish second at the Pac-12 Championship last season. Put forth an excellent effort during a 11-hole stretch in the middle of the round, going -2 and avoiding any bogeys. Finished in the Top-25 of a 93-golfer field.

BIRDIES (2): 8th Hole (Par 3; 139 yards), 15th Hole (Par 4; 341 yards)

Calynne Rosholt (+11/227/T59th)
Ended on a positive note thanks to a solid finish today, as she went even over her final seven holes.

BIRDIES (1): 14th Hole (Par 5; 508 yards)

UP NEXT
Mason Rudolph Invitational – Sept. 22-24 (Franklin, TN)

For the first time since 2018, Sun Devil Women's Golf will compete in the Mason Rudolph Invitational. The 23rd edition of the event will be played at Vanderbilt Legends Club near Nashville, where host institution Vanderbilt is based. Arizona State hopes weather isn't a factor this time as it was in their last appearance, with rain cutting the third round short. Coach Farr-Kaye's squad still managed to finish second behind host Vanderbilt.

The Sun Devils tied their program-low 54-hole score vs. par (-25) with a third-place finish in 2017, their first appearance in the event since 2013. ASU also competed at the Mason Rudolph Invitational from 2007-09 and 2005. The Maroon & Gold will be tested with an early trip to the southeast part of the country, a potential landing spot for NCAA Regionals.
