TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Water Polo (14-11, 2-4) concluded the regular season at home in the 12-11 win over MPSF conference opponent, No. 14 Indiana (14-14, 1-5). The senior class led the charge on Senior Day, and each senior recorded a goal on the scoresheet and combined for 10 of the 12 goals on the day in Petra Pardi's first win as Head Coach.
The 14 win season caps off the 2022 regular season and ties last season's total win mark after finishing the 2021 campaign 14-12.
"I am really glad that we got this win on Senior Day. We were overly excited to send our seniors out with a big win in our final home game," noted Interim Head Coach Petra Pardi
Among the senior's surge was Emma Fraser's five goal performance which tied her career high, three of which came in the first quarter against the Hoosiers. Those three goals along with goals from Emily Bennett and Blaire McDowell were enough for a 5-2 lead after the first frame.
Both teams put up three goals in the second quarter– the Sun Devil scorers being Emma Fraser, Borbala Kekesi, and Stevilyn Griffin. Fraser also tacked on two steals in the second quarter to keep it an 8-5 game at the half.
ASU slowed down a bit in the third quarter with the lone goal of the third coming from Amira Van Buren. Indiana was able to record three goals to pull within one heading into the final quarter. Vanda Baksa, Emma Fraser, and Emily Bennett got on the board in the fourth quarter to secure the win despite Indiana's late push.
The Sun Devils will head to Los Angeles next weekend for the MPSF Conference Championship Tournament where they will face #4 seed California in the first round on Friday, April 22. The game is set to kick off at 2:30 pm and can be viewed with an MPSF TV subscription.
