Turner Washington won the shot put and nearly set a new program record at Wednesday's Grand Canyon Invitational.

PHOENIX – Sun Devil track and field returned to outdoor competition Wednesday at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. ASU celebrated seven first-place finishes and four personal-best marks.

"I thought today was a good icebreaker for the team," head coach Dion Miller said. "We wanted to give our outdoor kids an opportunity to start early. We had a hard practice on Monday then came out here and competed and I think the kids were happy and refreshed to get back into a sense of normalcy and have a meet. I saw some great things today - [Amanda Carty] was just under 20 feet in the long jump, Turner Washington did a great job in the shot put obviously, along with Jorinde van Klinken. I think Ma'Kayla Dickerson was phenomenal, especially being homegrown, and so overall I thought we had good performances."

Fresh off of setting a meet record and personal record in Texas, Turner Washington took his talents outdoors, setting another personal best mark in the shot put crosstown and coming just shy of the program record. Washington set the bar high for his competition by throwing 19.91-meters in his first attempt. He unleashed a new personal best in his third attempt, his 21.07m toss going 3.71 meters further than teammate Ian Schulz' 17.36m. All-American and Olympian Ryan Whiting's 21.97m mark from 2010 is the top ASU mark.

Distance runner Joseph Dicke also set a new personal best in the 1,500-meter to open his outdoor season. His time of 4:03.79 was also almost 10 seconds off his previous time.

Megan Reniewicki rounded out the day of PRs by shaving two seconds off her 1,500m, finishing in 4:43.54.
