TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 10 Arizona State women's water polo team (4-1) went 1-1 on the second day of the Cross-Conference Challenge, dropping a close game to No. 3(T) Hawai'i before winning their second game of the weekend over Cal State East Bay.
ASU finishes the weekend Sunday with two more games, playing Sonoma State at 8 a.m. and No. 15 Princeton at 1:15 p.m. Both games will be broadcast via the ASU Live Stream and the whole day is free and open to the public.
Game 1: No. 3(T) Hawai'i 9, No. 10 Arizona State 7
The Sun Devils fell behind early as Hawai'i finished the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back goals from Borbala Kekesi and Emma Fraser brought ASU within striking distance before Hawai'i scored three more. Savannah Hampton scored the last goal of the half, bringing the score to 6-3 in favor of the Rainbow Warriors.
Kekesi netted another goal to open scoring in the fourth quarter before Alison Cameron and Meghan Beaudet each contributed a goal of their own. The Devils held the Rainbow Warriors to one goal scored in the third and closed the quarter trailing by one, 7-6. Hawai'i netted two more in the fourth frame and Cameron's final goal wasn't enough to close the deficit.
Kekesi and Cameron led the Sun Devils in scoring with two goals each.
In the net, Itzahiana Baca recorded 12 saves and a steal for ASU's defense. ASU held Hawai'i to their lowest score of the season and 10 goals less than their season average of 19.
