SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds saw two Sun Devil All-Americans punch return tickets to the Outdoor Championships as Samantha Noennig and William Paulson both advanced out of the West Region Saturday in Sacramento, California.

While last year Noennig had to hold her breath to find out if she would make it to her first NCAA Championship, she made it look easy in Sacramento this time around.

She clinched a spot with her first throw, but for good measure launched the shot 17.37m/57-0 feet in her second attempt to move into second place overall. She finished the competition in third and will head to Texas with a chance to sweep the shot put titles.

The last woman to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles in the shot put was former Sun Devil Maggie Ewen back in 2018.

On the track, indoor first-team All-American William Paulson grabbed an automatic qualifying place in the men's 1,500-meter run when he took third in his heat and fourth overall in the quarterfinal.

Paulson's quarterfinal heat was the faster of the two and featured three All-Americans from this past indoor season, including Paulson. His time of 3:41.19 would have been the third-fastest time in school history, but the senior Sun Devil already holds the school record of 3:38.35.

Josephine Anokye nearly advanced to her first national championship and finished 13th in the 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter hurdles, Jeminise Parris finished 17th and ran a personal best of 13.48 to inch closer to the top-10 in school history in the event.

The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will get going next month in Austin, Texas. Arizona State will send five athletes to compete for national titles with Seri Geisler, Derrick Monroe, Beatrice Llano, Samantha Noennig and William Paulson all heading to the Lone Star State in search of gold.
