TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State lacrosse team (5-1) received a standing ovation from Sun Devil fans after taking down the Presbyterian Blue Hose (1-4) in dominant fashion, 23-5, in the team's inaugural home game Saturday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
"I think the girls were excited to finally get home and get over the jitters of playing in front of a home crowd," said head coach Courtney Martinez Connor. "Every time we're able to play in our home state we're going to do some wonderful things and we're going to make some mistakes but I think overall we're certainly proud of the girls' effort today."
It only took the Sun Devils a little over a minute to get on the board as freshman midfielder Emily Glagolev scored to take the lead, a lead in which ASU never gave up for the remainder of the game. Seemingly almost every Sun Devil scored — 11 ASU players found the back of the net during the rout of the Blue Hose.
Freshman attacker Taylor Carson led the charge for Arizona State, scoring a career high six goals on the day. Three other Sun Devils recorded hat tricks during the game as well — Glagolev, junior attacker Kerri Clayton and sophomore midfielder Avery Hamill. Clayton and freshman Julia Burns also added three assists each to build on the program record 32 total Sun Devil points.
Arizona State's 23 goals marked the most goals scored in program history. The 15 goal difference is also the largest margin of victory in team history.
The victory was also full of career firsts, as four Sun Devils recorded goals for the first time (freshmen Kate Dougherty, Kennedy Jamieson, Erin Dibernardo and Haley Gorke) and all eligible players (32) took the field throughout the sixty-minute effort.
On the defensive end, goalkeepers Berkeley Bonneau, Sophia Thomas and Campbell Poe each saw time in the net. Bonneau led the way with four saves and Thomas recorded one of her own.
ASU led the Blue Hose in nearly every statistical category. The Sun Devils won 20 of 28 draw controls, successfully cleared 11 of 13 attempts (compared to 10-15 for the Blue Hose), scored on 23 of 30 shots on goal (compared to 5-10 for the Blue Hose) and caused 10 Blue Hose turnovers. Freshman midfielder Maddy Hunter picked up a career high 10 of those draw controls for the Sun Devils and Clayton caused a career high four turnovers.
Up next the Sun Devils head to Los Angeles for their first Pac-12 matchup at USC on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. MST. Fans can watch the game at www.pac-12.com/live/usc.
