PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Sun Devil baseball team fell in game two of a non-conference weekend series against UNCW, 9-0, on Saturday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Southpaw Eli Lingos got the start and provided good length for the Sun Devils, going a season-long seven innings to earn his second quality start. Gage Canning and Lyle Lin each recorded a hit to extend their hitting streak to 15 games to begin the season. Each team has earned a victory through the first two games of the series.

Lingos worked around several jams through his first five innings of work, utilizing his repertoire of pitches to keep the Seahawks batters off balance, especially with two-outs. The Seahawks went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position through the first five innings as Lingos prevented UNCW from taking a lead.

A leadoff walk and aggressive base running to begin the bottom of the first from Gage Canning would result in Canning reaching third on an error with just one out. The Seahawks starter, Zarion Sharpe, would retire the next two hitters to keep the game scoreless through one.

The Sun Devils would get another runner in scoring position in the second inning thanks to a Luke Leisenring walk that would advance Taylor Lane to second. Sharpe would once again work around the trouble, setting down the next two hitters to end the threat.

One of Arizona State's best scoring opportunities came in the bottom of the third after Eli Lingos worked around a two-out single in the top half of the inning. Lyle Lin advanced to third on a wild pitch after doubling and was joined on the base paths by Spencer Torkelson, who reached via walk. A double play would end the inning, with the score remaining 0-0.

Lingos would retire the side in the order in the home half of the fourth, shifting the momentum to the ASU dugout. The offense would respond by putting another runner in scoring position, as Taylor Lane stole second before advancing on a ground ball to the right side. Lane would later be caught trying to score after Alika Williams took off for second in an attempted steal.

The veteran left-hander Lingos showed his maturity after the Seahawks loaded the bases in the fifth with one out, getting the UNCW cleanup hitter Mason Berne to ground into a double play to end the scoring chance in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Sun Devils would once again threaten in their half of the sixth after the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead. A Trevor Hauver walk followed by a Taylor Lane singled, his third time reaching base in the game, put a runner in scoring position. The Seahawks reliever, Austin Easter, would come in for Sharpe and retire the next two hitters to end the inning.

UNCW scored two more runs in the top half of the seventh inning, but Eli Lingos prevented further damage by retiring David Sheaffer via flyout. Ryan Hingst and Grant Schneider earned the final two outs of the seventh inning with the Seahawks leading 7-0. Scottsdale native freshman Colby Davis made his first career appearance, pitching the ninth inning. After earning his first career hit last night, Hunter Jump singled in the bottom of the ninth before the Sun Devils fell to the Seahawks.

Notes:
  • Lyle Lin and Gage Canning each recorded a hit to extend their hitting streak to 15 games to begin the season. It represents the longest hitting streak to begin a season for a Sun Devil player since at least 1998.
  • Carter Aldrete extended his hitting streak to six games. After a stretch in which he went 2-for-21 (.095), Carter Aldrete has gone 11-for-23 (.478) with six RBI's during his current six-game hitting streak, raising his batting average to a .314 clip on the season.
  • Eli Lingos has gone at least 5.2 innings in each of his four starts this season and has yet to allow more than three runs in a single outing. He has missed recorded a quality start in all four of his outings by just two outs.
