SAN DIEGO, Calif./MESA, Ariz. – Half of the Sun Devil track and field program wrapped up their split weekend between the Triton Invitational and the Mesa T-Bird Classic. Throwers Maggie Ewen, Kyle Long and Tom Anderson, along with a handful of others, traveled to San Diego, while distance runners and the rest of the throwers competed just down the road at Mesa Community College.
Long and Ewen continued to shine as the countdown to the Pac-12 Championships and the NCAA postseason shortens.
"Kyle [Long] is getting real close to some bigger throws," said throws coach Brian Blutreich. "His consistency at higher levels is starting to happen in practice and now meets. He is putting himself in a good position to have success. Maggie [Ewen] is getting some really nice results, but I would like to see her consistency within the meets be a little better. But she is constantly working hard in practice to make the changes she needs."
While Ewen set new personal bests yet again in the discus throw and shot put, her marks kept her in the same spots on the ASU all-time top-10 lists. The redshirt junior hit 17.57m (57-7.50) in the shot put, while cracking the 60-meter mark in the discus throw for the first time at 60.17m (197-05).
Her shot put mark moves her up into sixth in the country, while her discus throw maintains her spot in second nationally.
Long PR'd yet again in the hammer throw, hitting 65.63m (215-3.75) to maintain his spot at fourth on the program's all-time list.
Back home in Mesa, throwers Kaylee Antill and Melanie Johnson threw for new personal bests as well in their respective events. In the discus, Antill hit 47.60m (156-02), while Johnson hurled the javelin 41.29m (135-05).
On the track, Melese Crozier ran two seconds faster than her previous best in the 800-meter event. The junior hit 2:10.30 for first in her event.
The rest of the Devils reunite this coming week as they host the University of Arizona for the annual Dual in the Desert on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29.
