LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Sun Devil track and field program wrapped up their three-day, three meet trip to the Los Angeles area, with the distance runners, men's sprinters Drelan Bramwell and Brandon Hasson, and redshirt junior Maggie Ewen highlighting the final competition at the Jim Bush Collegiate Invite on Saturday.
A total of 11 personal bests were set in the five-team challenge that included the Devils, UCLA, Texas A&M, UTEP and Alabama.
"This weekend was a good opportunity for us to get additional work in as we continue to prepare and push forward to the Pac-12 Championships in five weeks," said head coach Greg Kraft. "We're starting to see what our team is shaping up to be, while continuing to add pieces to the puzzle on both sides. The men continue to be balanced, while several women are taking strides and adding depth to our front-loaded team."
Ewen started the day off for the Devils in the early field events, as she again moved up another ASU top-10 list. This time, Ewen leapt former NCAA national champion Anna Jelmini into third all-time in the shot put with a mark of 17.39m (57-0.75). That throw currently sits 7th in the nation and 2nd in the west region.
During the mid-afternoon on the track, junior Drelan Bramwell and sophomore Brandon Hasson competed in the 100-meter dash for the first time in their young Sun Devil careers. Bramwell, who transferred to ASU this season, finished first in the event with a time of 10.41, while Hasson crossed in third with a time of 10.68 – both personal bests.
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, junior Shaunie Morrison also ran a new top-time and finished second with a time of 13.39. The time moves her into the ASU top-10 all-time list at No. 10.
The first distance event to go off the line was the women's 800-meter run, which featured freshmen Christine Williford and Alexis Nichols. Williford's primary event was the 800, while Nichols was competing in the event for the first time ever, and also on the heels of her running in the 1,500-meter at the Bryan Clay Invitational less than 24 hours prior. Both women ran new all-time bests, as Williford clocked 2:09.11 and Nichols ran 2:12.59.
In the last individual event of the day – the 1,500-meter run – four Devils were again competing for the second time in the past two days. Sophomore Brandon Boys and redshirt freshman Kyle Shinn ran in the 1,500 just the night before at the Bryan Clay, and turned around to run a faster time in their second attempt. Boys shaved over three seconds off his time from the night before, while Shinn lopped off five.
Graduate transfer Brittany Alexander had competed in the women's 5,000-meter event on Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invite. Today in the 1,500, Alexander ran a new collegiate best of 4:32.96 for fifth place. Her teammates, freshman Courtney Lewis and junior Billie Jo Dytrt, both competed in the same event after running the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Lewis recorded a new personal record of 4:41.52.
A majority of the team will enjoy a week off from competition, while several throwers travel to the Triton Invitational and Chula Vista Olympic Invitational this coming weekend.
