PHOENIX – Starting left-hander Eli Lingos limited UCLA to two earned runs over 5.2 innings and outfielder Hunter Bishop drove in a pair of runs but the Sun Devil Baseball team fell, 9-3, in game one of a three-game weekend series on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The bottom three in the Sun Devils lineup sparked the offense on the evening, going 5-for-11 and scoring two of the three Arizona State (11-13) runs on the night. Lingos was once again effective, keeping the game close after the Bruins jumped out to an early lead. The line finished at 5.2 innings, two earned runs and four strikeouts while walking five batters. Lingos pitched into the sixth inning for the sixth time in his first seven starts of the season.

A scoreless tie was broken in the top of the second inning as the UCLA (12-11) offense jumped out to an early lead. Second baseman Chase Stumpf and third baseman Ryan Kreidler each delivered RBI-singles in back-to-back at bats to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. The Bruins would tack on another run after outfielder Daniel Amaral drew a walk with the bases loaded to push the lead to 3-0.

Lingos bounced back to retire UCLA in the top of the third, momentum that the Sun Devils would build on in the bottom half. Infielder Taylor Lane followed up outfielder Gage Canning's leadoff single with a single of his own to move Canning to third and start the Sun Devil rally. Two batters later, outfielder Hunter Bishop just missed tying the game, instead getting the Sun Devils on the board with a sacrifice fly that would score Canning and cut the lead to 3-1.

UCLA added a run to their lead in the fourth inning as Daniel Amaral drove in his second run of the game with a RBI-single.

Trailing 4-1, the Sun Devils looked to the bottom of the order to create another scoring threat. The fifth inning began exactly the same as the one-run third inning. Canning and Lane set the table for the top of the lineup, as the first two batters of the inning reached via single. Just like in the third inning, Hunter Bishop came through for the Sun Devils, lacing a single through the right side to score Canning. Bishop's second RBI of the night trimmed the Bruin lead to 3-2.

With two on and two out in the top half the sixth inning, Lingos was relieved by right-hander Jake Godfrey. Godfrey continued his success with stranding inherited runners, inducing a ground ball to prevent two runs from scoring. Godfrey has now stranded 13 out of 14 inherited runners on the season.

Godfrey's final inning was a scoreless seventh, giving way to right-hander Chris Isbell. The line for Godfrey closed at 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit while striking out one.
Isbell continued Godfrey's strong relief work in the eighth inning, keeping the UCLA lead at 4-2 with a scoreless eighth inning.

The Devils continued to chip away at the lead in the in bottom of the eighth, this time manufacturing a run with plate discipline and fundamental baseball. A pair of walks started the inning, with first baseman Lyle Lin reaching base for the third time of the night with a leadoff walk and infielder Andrew Snow putting two runners on base with a walk of his own. Infielder Carter Aldrete had a productive at bat, smacking a fly ball deep enough to score pinch-runner Jackson Willeford from third base and cut the lead to 4-3.

That would be the end of the Sun Devil rally, however, with the Bruins putting up five runs in the top of the ninth to effectively put the game out of reach.

NOTES: After reaching base three times tonight, Lyle Lin has now reached base in 23 of his 24 games this year…Lin has now reached base in 10 consecutive games, his second on-base streak of 10+ games in the first 24 games…Lin also extended his hitting streak to a career-long seven games…The bottom three batters in the Sun Devil order (Gage Canning (7th), Taylor Lane (8th), and Zach Cerbo (9th) combined to go 5-for-11 with a double and two runs scored…Jake Godfrey has adapted nicely to his role in the bullpen, stranding 12 of his 13 runners he has inherited this season…With two more hits on the evening, Carter Aldrete now has six multi-hit games on the season and is currently riding a five game hitting streak…Chris Isbell made an appearance for the first time since Feb. 21.
