SEATTLE – Sabrina Haines (12 points), Sophie Brunner (11 points) and Quinn Dornstauder (10 points) all scored in double figures to help lead the No. 25 Arizona State women's basketball team to a 72-54 win over Utah in the first round of the 2017 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament.
ASU shot 42 percent from the floor and was especially effective from the free throw line where it made 89 percent of its attempts (23-26).
Three other Sun Devils – Kelsey Moos, Kiara Russell and Robbi Ryan – added seven points each for ASU. Dornstauder led the Sun Devils with a career-high-tying 12 rebounds to secure her fifth double-double of the season. Nearly reaching a double-double was Moos, who pulled down nine rebounds to go with her seven points. Russell added a career-high seven rebounds for the Sun Devils, who outrebounded Utah 45-29.
Also posting solid contributions for the Sun Devils were Reili Richardson, who led ASU with six assists to go with six points, and Jamie Ruden, who scored five points in her first action since suffering a foot injury in late December.
With the win the Sun Devils (19-11) advance to Friday's quarterfinal round where they will face fourth-seeded and No. 15 UCLA on Friday (2 p.m. PT/3 p.m MT).
Up 33-27 at the half, the Sun Devils came out and started the third quarter with a 14-5 run to take a 47-32 lead after Brunner's 3-pointer with 4:21 remaining. Haines (six points), Brunner (five points) and Moos (three points) combined for all the points on the scoring run.
The Utes would get back within 10 in the late stages of the third quarter, but ASU would respond with a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach. Five different Sun Devils contributed to the scoring burst that was capped off by Ryan's triple that gave ASU its largest lead of the game, 63-41, with 6:27 remaining.
Dornstauder, Richardson and Ryan scored four points each to combine for 12 of ASU's 18 points in the first quarter. ASU made 50 percent of its shots (6-12) and 75 percent of its free throws (6-8) to take an 18-9 advantage after 10 minutes. Utah would outscore ASU 18-15 in the second quarter to get within six points at the half.
Friday's second quarterfinal of the day will be the third meeting of the season and the second in less than a week between the Sun Devils and Bruins. UCLA took both meetings, winning 69-60 in Los Angeles and 55-52 last Sunday in Tempe. Brunner (18.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Dornstauder (10.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) paced the Sun Devils in the two games. ASU was without Moos in the first meeting and without Ruden for both games.
