PHOENIX – The Sun Devil baseball team dropped its first game of the season, 18-4, against No. 20 Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Sophomore Zach Dixon started on the bump for the Devils (3-1), gliding past the Cowboys (2-2) in the first two innings. The Nevada-native ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning, walking two batters and hitting one. Oklahoma State got on the board through a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead.
Dixon departed two outs into the fourth inning to be replaced by sophomore Garvin Alston Jr. The Cowboys would tack on two more in the fourth using a single and a passed ball, both unearned.
ASU had its fair chances to score as they brought runners to scoring position in the third and sixth innings, however, they were unable to capitalize both times.
Oklahoma State would add five runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 11-0. In the bottom half of the seventh, the Devils would score their first run of the game as sophomore outfielder Tyler Williams launched a pinch-hit home run high off the center field batter's eye. The big fly represented the first of his career and the first of the season for the Sun Devil offense.
Freshman right-hander Alec Marsh saw his first collegiate action, not allowing a run in his only inning of action.
After Oklahoma State scored a pair in the top of the eighth to push their lead up to 13-1, freshman infielder Carter Aldrete pulled a high fastball over the left field fence for a home run, his first as a Sun Devil to trim the lead to 13-2.
The ASU offense would respond to five Oklahoma State runs in the top-half of the ninth with two of their own. Freshman outfielder Hunter Bishop got the rally going with his second single of the game followed by a double by sophomore outfielder Gage Canning to put two runners in scoring position. After coming through for the game-winning hit two-RBI double on Sunday, sophomore infielder Jeremy McCuin once again found the left-center gap, this time for a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 18-4.
Oklahoma State was led by freshman shortstop Cameron Dobbs who had four hits and four RBI's. Junior outfielder Jon Littell added four hits and two RBI's of his own. Freshman right-hander Jonathan Housley got he start for the Cowboys, throwing five scoreless inning on his way to earning the victory.
