TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophie Brunner and Quinn Dornstauder combined for 33 points, but it would not be enough as the No. 23 Arizona State women's basketball team was upset by Arizona 62-58 on Friday night in the first of consecutive games between the two teams.
Brunner scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half for the Sun Devils (16-10, 7-8 Pac-12), who shot 38 percent for the game and were plus-10 in rebounding (41-31), including an 18-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Dornstauder also had a solid final 20 minutes as she scored 10 of her 15 points after halftime. Both Brunner and Dornstauder, who also had three blocks, tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
After missing the last 12 games with a foot injury, senior Kelsey Moos started against Arizona and scored four points to go with six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Also coming through with contributions for the Sun Devils were Kiara Russell, who scored seven points and had three assists and two steals with zero turnovers, and Kianna Ibis, who scored six points.
LaBrittney Jones and Breanna Workman had 15 points each to lead Arizona (13-13, 4-11). Jones (seven points) and Workman (six points) combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats outscored the Sun Devils 18-14 over the final 10 minutes to come away with the win.
Tied at 44-44 after three quarters, the two teams went back and forth in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Arizona would eventually take a three-point lead before two free throws by Russell and a layup by Brunner gave ASU a 54-53 lead with 5:52 remaining.
The Wildcats would go more than four minutes without a field goal as the only points they generated during that stretch were a pair of free throws by Jones, the second of which put Arizona up 55-54 with 3:10 remaining. After another basket extended Arizona's lead to three, Reili Richardson connected with a jumper to get ASU within a single point, 57-56 with 1:18 remaining.
The Sun Devils were able to get a stop on the opposite end, but would turn the ball back over to the Wildcats, who would add two more free throws to once again go up by three. Brunner came right back with a layup to once again make it a one-point game but the Wildcats would again go up by three after Lauren Evans' jumper with 15 seconds remaining. Richardson attempted to tie it for the Sun Devils, but her shot was off the mark and the Wildcats would make one more free throw to clinch the win.

The Wildcats would come back with seven straight points to go up 13-11 before Russell beat the shot clock and connected from long range to put ASU back on top 14-13. Arizona would strike back on its ensuing possession as Malena Washington hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the quarter to go up 16-14 after the first 10 minutes.
