SALT LAKE CITY – Quinn Dornstauder just missed her second consecutive double-double (15 points, nine rebounds) and freshmen Reili Richardson and Robbi Ryan scored 10 points each as the No. 19 Arizona State women's basketball team defeated Utah 66-44 on Friday night.
Dornstauder, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds in ASU's double-overtime win over Cal last Sunday, also had a career-high-tying three assists, two blocks and one steal in Friday's win. Sabrina Haines and Sara Hattis added seven points each for the Sun Devils (11-3, 2-1 Pac-12), who shot 40 percent and were plus-16 on the boards (48-32). Sophie Brunner led ASU's rebounding effort with 10 while Ryan (seven rebounds) and Richardson (career-high six rebounds) combined for 13 boards. Richardson also led ASU with five assists.
After holding Cal 18.8 points below its scoring average, the Sun Devils came up with another defensive gem as they held the Utes (12-2, 1-2) 28.1 points below their usual scoring output.
The Sun Devils scored the game's first nine points (Ryan - five points/Dornstauder - four points) and never looked back as they led 22-5 after one quarter, 34-15 at the half and by as many as 25 in the second half.
The five points Utah scored in the first quarter was one point more than the four Holy Cross scored in the second quarter against ASU on Dec. 21, the fewest points scored in a quarter by an ASU opponent this season. The 15 points the Utes had after 20 minutes equaled the fewest points scored in a half by a Sun Devil opponent this season (Holy Cross scored 15 in the first half).
Ryan led ASU with seven points in the first half while Dornstauder helped the Sun Devils maintain their advantage with nine points in the second half.
The loss was Utah's first of the season at home after the Utes won their first seven games of the season at the Huntsman Center. On the flip side, the Sun Devils improved to 16-3 in Pac-12 road games since 2015.
All 10 of ASU's active players scored and logged double-digits in minutes against Utah. The Sun Devils were without four-year starter Kelsey Moos (102 starts in 104 career games), who suffered a foot injury late in Sunday's win at Cal. Ryan started her first game as a Sun Devil in place of Moos. Kiara Russell (four points, four rebounds, one steal) returned from injury after missing ASU's last six games.
The Sun Devils close out their road trip on Sunday (4 p.m. MT) when they play at Colorado. Sunday's game can be seen on Pac-12 Networks and heard on NBC Sports Radio AM 1060.
