TEMPE – The No. 23 Sun Devil women's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field for the second consecutive game en route to a 79-52 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
Four Sun Devils reached double digits in the effort, led by Sophie Brunner's second double-double of the season as she led all players with 18 points and 10 rebounds Reili Richardson and Quinn Dornstauder posted 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kianna Ibis came off the bench to the tune of a season-best 13 points, helping the Sun Devils to a 34-16 advantage in bench scoring.
The Sun Devils (8-2) absolutely dominated the boards, outrebounding the Golden Eagles, 43-16 – a plus-27 margin that was ASU's largest of the season. It was also notable as ORU (7-5) entered the contest leading its conference in total rebounds and rebounds per game, averaging 42.6 coming into the contest.
The Sun Devils used a 8-0 run in the final 1:22 of the third quarter to finally put a comfortable distance between themselves and the efficient ORU offense, taking a 60-40 advantage on Richardson's buzzer beater for the team's largest lead of the game to that point.
It was all ASU from there as the squad extended its lead to as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter. Every player on the roster that earned minutes in the game found their way on to the score sheet.
The hot-shooting Sun Devils wasted little time finding their stroke, knocking down 10-of-14 shots (71.4 percent) in the first quarter to stake an early 22-15 lead over the Golden Eagles.
Brunner was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field in the frame to lead all players with six points, but ORU stood its ground, shooting 50 percent from the field itself to keep within striking distance.
The Devils would take a 13-point lead - its largest of the half - midway through the second quarter behind a nifty inbound pass from Kelsey Moos to Ibis for the easy layup followed by a Richardson trey to put the Devils up 35-22 but the scrappy Eagles reeled off the next six points to cut the lead back to six.
An Ibis and-one and back-to-back buckets from Brunner would help the Devils to a 44-31 advantage heading into the locker rooms as Brunner finished the half 7-of-7 from the field with 14 points with Dornstauder adding 10 of her own on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Devils shot over 63 percent (19-of-30) from the field in the first half, making it back-to-back first halves over 60 percent from the field after a season-best 68.2 percent against Middle Tennessee on Tuesday.
The Devils will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21 as they close out the 2016-17 non-conference schedule against Holy Cross at 5 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.
