PHOENIX – Center fielder Andrew Shaps’ walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Sun Devil Baseball a 1-0 victory Sunday and secured a series sweep against New Mexico at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Sun Devils (26-15) have swept their past two weekend series’ and are 9-3 in their past 12 games.

Shortstop Colby Woodmansee and catcher Brian Serven were both hit by pitches in the ninth to put the game-winning run in scoring position for Shaps, who drove home Woodmansee with a base hit to right field on a 1-0 count.

Right-hander Eder Erives (5-1) allowed just one hit and struck out seven across 6 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. He took over for starting left-hander Zach Dixon with two on and two out in the third, and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases before a fly ball to right field ended the Lobos’ threat. He issued strikeouts to six of the next eight batters he faced, including the side in the fifth, and retied the final 10 batters he faced.

Dixon tossed a scoreless 2 2/3 innings and conceded two hits and three walks, and struck out a pair in his third consecutive Sunday start. He worked around leadoff base runners in each of the first two innings to keep New Mexico off the board. The Lobos (30-16) opened the first with a triple, but Dixon recorded three straight outs to keep him there, and then negated a walk in the second with a strikeout and a double-play groundout.

Notes: Canning singled to open the first inning and has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games, the team’s second-longest streak this season…Shaps picked up two of the Devils’ four hits on the afternoon.
