AZUSA, Calif. -- After the only competition day at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Arizona State track and field program demonstrated progression in several key areas while also picking up victories in several throwing events on Friday.
While the Devils experienced several highs by the late hours of Friday evening, the morning started off on a strange note with the men's 4x100 relay.
The men's squad of Jamol James, Isaiah Underwood, Brandon Hasson and Ben Trotter blazed to what looked to be the ninth-fastest time in the country and seventh-best in the west region at 39.52.
Nearly an hour after the event finished with Sun Devil men taking first place, officials said a mistake was made due to a sensor malfunction and the event would need to be ran again. Due to the Devils' participation in several events throughout the day, they declined to do so. A time would not be registered for the relay group.
While the day started off on a strange foot, the finish and everything in between produced other results.
In the first women's field event of the day, freshman Jessica Barreira broke her personal record in the javelin throw with a toss of 41.62m (136-6). She would finish in 10th place out of 44 athletes. The mark also moved her into 8th on the ASU all-time list.
Across the field, redshirt sophomore Maggie Ewen would continue her success in competition with a first-place finish in the discus throw with a mark of 54.67m (179-4). Right behind her was teammate and senior Ginger Jarchow in third with a mark of 48.75m (159-11).
On the track, freshman Sierra Irvin blazed to a new personal record and also the top time of all collegiate competitors at 54.78. Later in the afternoon, Irvin would also run another personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.50.
In the men's sprints, James ran against several athletes competing for Brazil and Nike's Ashton Eaton -- who currently holds the world record in the decathlon and indoor heptathlon -- and clocked a time of 10.45 and a tie for sixth. He finished second out of all collegiate athletes.
Back in the field, redshirt junior Thomas Anderson clinched first place with a new personal best of 18.90m (62-0.25). Senior Ahmed Hassan and redshirt junior Kyle Long finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Next door, freshman Hudson Keffer placed third and second collegiately with a throw of 65.92m (216-3).
In the jumps, sophomore Mason Ford set an outdoor personal record with a clearance of 2.05m (6-8.75) for sixth place. While he was jumping, graduate senior Jen Owen set a personal record of her own in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.99 for 10th place and fifth collegiately.
Not more than a few hours after her first victory of the day, Ewen would earn her second in the women's shot put. Her heave of 16.37m (53-8.50) would be nearly an entire meter further than the second place finisher.
While junior pole vaulter Nathan Hiett did not reach a new personal best, he did win the men's event with a vault of 4.91m (16-1.25).
In the last event of the evening -- the 1,500-meter run -- both men and women went out in style. For the men, junior Bernie Montoya and redshirt sophomore Cody Brazeal ran the best they had ran in their college careers, as Montoya clocked a 3:45.52 and Brazeal a 3:47.57. It was Montoya's first time running the event since the Pac-12 Championships in 2014, and the best time he has recorded since high school, according to coach Louie Quintana.
Freshman Hannah-Benoit Bucher, graduate senior Madison Davis and senior Cristina Juan Torres all ran in the women's 1,500 event. Benoit-Bucher and Davis both ran new personal bests and won their respective heats with times of 4:26.69 and 4:33.84, respectively.
Several other Sun Devils wrap up the Mt. SAC Relays competition on Saturday, including Keyasia Tibbs and Josh Dixon in the triple jump events and Maggie Ewen in the discus throw.
