PHOENIX, Ariz. – Starting right-hander Seth Martinez put together another strong outing and four Sun Devils drove in multiple runs to highlight a 12-4 victory against Eastern Michigan on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The evening, dubbed “Cory Hahn Night” in celebration of Sun Devil for Life Cory Hahn and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ commitment to the Cory Hahn Center Field Scholarship Endowment, began with a special pregame check presentation, a first pitch from Hahn, and the unveiling of a new “Cory Hahn #34” emblem on the right-field wall.
Martinez (3-0) conceded one earned run, his first of the season, on nine hits, struck out seven and did not issue a walk in six innings. He has now allowed just one earned run in 19 innings this season.
Juniors David Greer, Brian Serven and Colby Woodmansee combined for 10 RBI on eight hits and scored six runs, while freshman Jeremy McCuin, who entered the game with one career pinch-hit at-bat, had a night of firsts as he started at third base, drove in two runs and notched a double.
Greer set a career high with four hits and tied his career-best mark in RBI and runs scored with three in each category, Serven punctuated a three-hit, five-RBI night with a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Woodmansee notched his team-leading fifth multiple RBI game.
The Sun Devils (6-3) used five relief pitchers across the final three innings to close out the Eagles (5-5), including freshman right-hander Chris Isbell, who finished out the ninth for this third scoreless inning of the season.
Martinez allowed one run on five hits across the opening two frames, and found himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the top of the third inning, but he retired three straight on a pair of strikeouts and a pop fly in foul territory to find his groove. He followed with three consecutive 1-2-3 innings for his third win of the year.
Two straight leadoff walks and a RBI single from Greer staked the Devils an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles responded with a double and a base hit in the following frame to knot the game.
ASU scored seven runs in the middle innings to stretch its lead to seven, 8-1. McCuin drove a double down the left-field line in the fourth inning for his first career RBI, and center fielder Andrew Shaps led off the fifth with a double and scored on a base hit from Greer, who followed him home two batters later on a double from Serven. Woodmansee’s two-run double in the sixth was bookended by a sacrifice fly from McCuin and a RBI single from Serven.
EMU responded once again in the final third of the game with three runs and brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth, but right-hander Eder Erives issued a swinging strikeout to end the threat.
Shaps and Greer pushed ASU’s lead back to five, 9-4, with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the eighth before Serven put the game out of reach with a three-run homer, his first of the season.
