COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Arizona State men and women's track and field program showed bright spots at their first national meet of the season at the Texas A&M Quadrangular on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Redshirt junior Tim White once again earned his second-straight victory in the men's triple jump, this time outdoing his leap last week by nearly two feet with a jump of 15.90m (52-2.00). He would also earn a fourth-place finish in the men's long jump with a result of 7.01m (23-0.00).
Fellow redshirt junior and teammate Thomas Anderson picked up his first top finish of the year in the men's shot put with a toss of 18.26 (59-11.00). It was just under three feet short of his personal best.
Also in the men's throws, Kyle Long broke his weight throw personal record set last week (17.71m) with a throw of 17.73m (58-2.00) for second place.
Last week, junior jumper Keyasia Tibbs broke her own triple jump ASU all-time record. This week she would fall short of that mark, but still come away with the victory with a jump of 12.57m (41-3.00).
In the throws, junior Magdalyn Ewen destroyed her old personal best (16.08m) in the shot put with a winning toss of 16.52m (54-2.50). She missed the A&M meet record by just four and one-half inches. She also finished just .23-meters behind Oklahoma All-American Julia Reedy in the weight throw.
The shot put earned Ewen her first victory of the season.
The Sun Devils really shined in the distance events under coach Louie Quintana, as the women earned first and second in the 1-mile run and the top-three spots in the 3,000-meter.
Graduate senior Jen Owen ran to a first-place finish in the 1-mile event with a time of 4:51.36 in her first track and field race as a Sun Devil. Junior Chelsey Totten was right behind her with a time of 4:54.78 to give ASU a 1-2 finish.
In the 3,000-meter race, redshirt junior Adriana Olivas ran away with the victory with a time of 9:39.57. Redshirt senior Shaina Corbin and freshman Samantha Ortega followed in second and third with times of 9:43.62 and 9:44.15, respectively.
Men's pole vaulters Matthew Eckles and Nathan Hiett both broke their own personal bests after clearing the bar at 5.01m (16-5.25). Eckles had a previous best of 4.80m while Hiett cleared 4.90m.
