FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men and women's track and field program started the season with new personal records set by several athletes, making for a solid start to head coach Greg Kraft's 20th season.
"It's like any first meet of the season -- you try to establish your protocol for competition," Kraft said. "I thought we came out here and had a solid day in the throws. Tim White was a nice introduction to the team and nice to see our distance runners join the fray. Overall it's just a starting point for us."
Four victories by the Sun Devils also highlighted the afternoon in Flagstaff in the first indoor meet of the season.
Redshirt junior Kyle Long took first place in the men's weight throw with a toss of 17.71m (58-01.25), breaking his old personal best of 17.41m (57-1.50) last season. He also broke his personal best in the shot put with a throw of 16.97m (55-08.25).
Redshirt junior and Sun Devil wide receiver Tim White showed his talents off the football field, as he took first place in the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.44m (50-08.00). He also added at third-place finish in the men's long jump with a 7.02m (23-00.50) performance.
In the 60-meter dash, graduate transfer Reggie Lewis crossed the line in second with a time of 6.80.
Coach Louie Quintana's distance teams performed well in the elevation, with the men and women's distance medley relay teams taking first place. Redshirt sophomore Cody Brazeal, redshirt junior Blake Elliott, redshirt freshman Brandon Boys and redshirt junior C.J. Albertson clocked a time of 10:31.81.
For the women, it was redshirt senior Shaina Corbin, junior Chelsey Totten and graduate seniors Madison Davis and Jennifer Owen took the top spot with a time of 12:16.09.
In the jumps for the women, it was junior Keyasia Tibbs turning in a personal best with a leap of 12.78m (41-11.25) for second place.
Redshirt sophomore thrower Magdalyn Ewen turned in two top-three finishes, with a second-place throw in the shot put of 16.00m (52-06.00). She later earned third in the weight throw with a toss of 17.91m (58-09.25).
The women wrapped up five other top-three finishes, including Kristiana Warth and Haleigh Fritts in the pole vault, Ashley Weber in the weight throw, Jasmine Gibbs in the 60-meter dash, and the women's 4x400 relay team of Melese Crozier, LaTroya Franklin, Sydney Mosley and Sierra Irvin.
