CORVALLIS, Ore.—The Arizona State wrestling team came back from a 9-0 deficit to tie No. 20 Oregon State in team points, 15-15, but the Beavers were awarded a team point for the advantage in total match points (51-43), earning them the 16-15 win on Monday night at Gill Coliseum.
With the loss, ASU is 3-2 in overall duals and 0-1 in Pac-12 competition while the Beavers improve to 2-0, 1-0 in league action.
The Sun Devils dropped the three opening weight classes before junior Matt Kraus (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) picked up a 6-0 decision over Abraham Rodriguez at 149 pounds to get ASU on the board.
Following the break, ASU dropped its match at 165 pounds before storming back and winning the four remaining bouts, from 174 pounds all the way to a victory at heavyweight.
Junior Ray Waters (7-2, 1-0 Pac-12) started things off by avenging his loss to Beaver Joe Latham in the dual last season, picking up the 5-3 decision to cut OSU’s lead to 15-6.
In the bout between each team’s ranked wrestlers in the lineup, 184-pound redshirt junior No. 8 Blake Stauffer (9-1, 1-0 Pac-12) upset No. 6 Taylor Meeks in a 6-3 decision.
At 197 pounds, redshirt junior Josh DaSilveira (6-4, 1-0 Pac-12) edged out Cody Crawford, 3-2, before redshirt senior Chace Eskam (7-4, 1-0 Pac-12) used a takedown late in the third period to defeat Nate Keeve, 3-2, to tie up the match.
The Sun Devils are back in action next week, traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., on Dec. 5-6 for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite.
