Second-Half Woes Dash Devils’ Hopes On The Road

Oregon State outscored the Sun Devils, 21-3, in the second half and handed Arizona State its second loss of the season, 35-27, Saturday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

OSU running backs Storm Woods and Terron Ward ripped off touchdown runs of 78 and 66 yards in the first quarter as the Beavers took an early 14-3 field.

ASU responded with three unanswered touchdowns, including a 46-yarder to tight end Kody Kohl and a 36-yard fumble return by linebacker Antonio Longino, to head to the locker room with a 24-14 lead at halftime.

However, the Devils were held to just 110 total yards of offense in the second half as their five-game winning streak was snapped.

The Beavers drew within three with 3:19 left in the third quarter as quarterback Sean Mannion found wide receiver Victor Bolden on a 20-yard strike to make it 24-21. A Zane Gonzalez 29-yard field goal early in the fourth put the Devils back up by six, but Mannion found wide receiver Jordan Villamin in stride for a 66-yard bomb and a 28-27 advantage with 10:55 left in the game.

OSU extended their lead to eight and sealed the win after linebacker Michael Doctor returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown with 1:38 remaining to play.

The Devils reached their own 33-yard line with just over a minute to play, but quarterback Taylor Kelly was sacked on fourth down to end their chance for a comeback.

Kelly threw for 264 yards, two scores and two interceptions, wide receiver Jaelen Strong added nine receptions for 103 yards, and running back D.J. Foster turned in 116 all-purpose yards.

Mannion finished with 251 yards passing and two touchdowns, and Villamin had four catches for 127 yards and a score as the Beavers snapped a four-game losing streak.
