Devils Avenge 2013 Losses With Dominant Win Over The Cardinal
With a controlling performance on both sides of the ball, the Sun Devils defeated reigning two-time Pac-12 Conference champion and 23rd-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 26-10, in a rematch of last season’s Pac-12 Championship game Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.
The Sun Devils scored the most points allowed by the nation’s top-rated defense through the air and on the ground. Quarterback Mike Bercovici completed 23-of-33 pass attempts for 245 yards and one touchdown in his third consecutive start for the Sun Devils. Running back D.J. Foster rushed for 59 yards and one touchdown and also added seven receptions for 92 yards, while wide receiver Jaelen Strong caught eight passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, ASU’s defense forced a three-and-out on Stanford’s first possession to set the tone for the rest of the game as the Cardinal were shut out in the opening 30 minutes for the first time in 87 games. Linebacker Antonio Longino led the Sun Devil defense with seven solo tackles, including one for loss, and forced one fumble.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Devils’ offense got rolling in the second quarter as they scored the first points of the game on a one-yard touchdown run by Foster. A 10-yard sack by cornerback Lloyd Carrington stifled Stanford’s drive on their ensuing possession and a muffed punt by Cardinal returner Ty Montgomery set up the Devils’ second touchdown of the game and a 14-0 halftime lead.
The victory was sealed when the threatening Cardinal were held to a four-and-out with the ball on ASU’s 15-yard-line. The Devils defense forced four consecutive incomplete passes with the final endzone shot defended by junior cornerback Kweishi Brown, who broke up five of Stanford’s 20 pass attempts in the game.
In its most well-rounded game of the season, the Devils were only penalized twice for nine yards, did not turn the ball over, and held Stanford to just 76 rushing yards, which marked only the 2nd time in its last 31 games the Cardinal have been held under 100 rushing yards.
