Devils Withstand Furious Second-Half Surge In Win Over Notre Dame
In a game of three distinct scoring runs, the Sun Devils used plays on both sides of the ball to weather a rally by No. 10 Notre Dame and secure a 55-31 win in one of the biggest home games in program history on Saturday afternoon at Sun Devil Stadium.
The Sun Devils’ defense forced five turnovers and scored two interceptions, and the offense used a well-balanced attack to earn the program’s first win over the Irish and the first over a top-10 opponent since ASU upset then-No. 6 Oregon 45-42 on Oct. 19, 2002 in Eugene, Ore.
After a Notre Dame field goal opened the scoring midway the first quarter, the Sun Devils scored 34 unanswered points to jump out to a 31-point lead with just over a minute to play in the first half. A number of momentum-swinging plays highlighted the Devils’ second quarter, including safety Damarious Randall’s 59-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor Kelly to wide receiver Cameron Smith.
However, the Fighting Irish countered with a 28-point run of their own, capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass with just over six minutes to play in the game.
With the Devils’ lead wilted to just three, 34-31, the Sun Devil offense fought down the field in five plays for 75 yards to push its advantage back to 10. Running back D.J. Foster rushed three times for 31 yards on the drive while fellow running back Demario Richard caught two passes for 44 yards, including the latter for a four-yard touchdown.
ASU’s defense stepped up again on Notre Dame’s ensuing possession as cornerback Lloyd Carrington returned an interception for a 58-yard touchdown to stretch the Devils’ advantage to 17 with fewer than four minutes to play.
On the Irish’s second-to-last possession, the Devils forced three incomplete passes and defensive tackle Viliami Latu sacked Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson for a 22-yard loss on fourth down. That sack set up ASU’s final touchdown of the game, a two-yard run by quarterback Taylor Kelly, and ensured a 24-point victory.
