Gonzalez’s Leg Leads To Overtime Win Over Utah

Zane Gonzalez kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime for his fourth field goal of the night and the Sun Devils earned their fourth straight victory with a 19-16 win over No. 17 Utah on Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.

ASU held the Utes to a scoreless first possession in overtime after they forced Utah to a three-and-out and kicker Andy Phillips missed consecutive 35-yard attempts. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham called a timeout prior to Phillips’ first attempt to avoid a delay of game penalty, which went wide right, and his second try sailed left of the goal posts.

Freshman tailback Demario Richard rushed for consecutive four-yard gains in overtime to set up Gonzalez's winning kick from the 19-yard line. Richard led the Sun Devils’ ground attack as he rushed for 116 yards on 14 attempts for an average of more than eight yards per carry.

The Sun Devils marched 72 yards on the first possession of the game and punctuated their drive with a 20-yard field goal by Gonzalez, who added a 45-yard nine minutes later for an early 6-0 lead.

Quarterback Taylor Kelly connected with wide receiver Jaelen Strong on a six-yard pass with more than seven minutes remaining in the first half to score the first touchdown of the game. ASU covered three quarters of the field in five plays, including a 32-yard run by Richard and a 32-yard catch by Strong.

Utah pulled with seven on a 36-yard field goal by Phillips to end the first half, and outscored the Devils 10-0 in the third quarter to take its first lead of the game, 16-13.

Gonzalez’s 30-yard field with just under six minutes to play capped an eight-play, 61-yard drive by the Devils and tied the game at 16 points apiece.

ASU emerged with a 4-1 record after playing four ranked opponents in its previous five games.

Utah quarterback Travis Wilson finished the day 12-of-22 for 57 yards and one touchdown, while running Devontae Booker ran for 146 yards and a touchdown.
