Weather, Husky Defense Not Enough To Stop ASU In Seattle
Taylor Kelly threw for two touchdowns – the game-winner included - in his first action in more than a month and the Sun Devils withstood the elements and a voracious Washington defense to defeat the Huskies, 24-10, on Saturday in Seattle.
With winds gusting over 40 miles an hour and swirling rains coming down for much of the game, the contest turned into a matchup of defenses. The teams combined for 25 tackles for loss, including 13 by ASU and 12 by UW, as both offenses were held under 300 yards of total offense. The Devils held Washington to just 290 total yards and forced three turnovers, while the Huskies kept ASU to a season-low 285 yards and forced seven sacks.
ASU took a 10-0 halftime lead behind a 16-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Jaelen Strong and a 33-yard field goal by kicker Zane Gonzalez.
After ASU shut the Huskies out for a half and some change, it was UW’s defense that helped get them on the board after linebacker John Timu returned Kelly’s first interception of the season 63 yards for a touchdown with 4:13 left in the third quarter to cut the Sun Devil lead, 10-7.
With the crowd back in the game and the UW offense driving on its ensuing possession, safety Jordan Simone helped quell the momentum with his second interception of the season to set the Devils up in Husky territory. The drive stalled in the red zone, however, and a failed field goal attempt led to a 15-play, 80-yard drive by the Huskies and a 23-yard field goal to even things at 10 with 7:14 left in the game.
With the game knotted at 10 points apiece and all the momentum seemingly going in the Huskies’ direction, the Sun Devils used a methodical nine-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to wide receiver Gary Chambers as the former was getting hit to take a 17-10 lead with three minutes left in regulation.
The defense did the rest with back-to-back sacks to set up a desperation fourth-down attempt that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by cornerback Armand Perry with under a minute remaining in regulation.
