Track Host Arizona State Invitational This Weekend

TEMPE, Ariz. - For the second weekend in a row, the Arizona State track and field teams will play host to an outdoor invitational, this week welcoming Kansas State, Northern Arizona and Ohio State to Sun Angel Stadium for the Arizona State Invitational. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the throwing events while the running starts at 3:30 p.m.

ALL-AMERICANS
Five Sun Devils returned to Tempe as All-Americans two weeks ago after placing in the Top 8 in their respective events at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Lisa Aguilera took seventh in the women's 3,000 meter run while the quartet of Seth Amoo, Lewis Banda, Jason Barton and Steve Fitch took fifth in the men's 4x400m relay. Aguilera posted a 9:18.80 in the finals only race while the men rounded the track in 3:07.41 to win their heat as four other teams in the other two heats made the circuit faster.

Amoo also finished 15th in the men's 200m dash while teammates Trevell Quinley (12th) and Seneca Holmes (10th) competed in the long jump and 60m hurdles, respectively.

ALL 4 OF THE 4x4 HELP ASU SCORE
The men's 4x400m relay team of Seth Amoo, Lewis Banda, Jason Barton and Steve Fitch went undefeated in the event this indoor season and took fifth at the NCAA Championships. After two outdoor season races this year, all four have qualified individually for the 400m dash at the 2003 NCAA West Regional meet to be held at Stanford. As of Wednesday (March 26), Banda, Barton, Amoo and Fitch had the second, third, fourth and fifth fastest times, respectively, in the nation so far this year.

SCOUTING: ASU INVITATIONAL
Arizona State, Kansas State, Ohio State and Northern Arizona will be on hand at Joe Selleh Track this weekend for the Arizona State Individual. Several unattached individuals also will competing.

LAST TIME OUT: BALDY CASTILLO
Sixteen times or marks were turned in at the Baldy Castillo Invitational over the weekend by Sun Devil athletes that qualify them for the 2003 NCAA West Regional meet at Stanford.

On the women's side, nine marks for the NCAA meet were met with eight of the marks coming from five athletes in the field events. Sandra Orsund led the way with three marks (discus, hammer and shot put) while Julia Pedersen (discus and shot put) came in with two marks. Also earning a spot in the regional event were Molly Clarke (discus), Becky Holley (javelin), Tinishia Johnson (long jump) and Desiree Davila (1,500m run). The 4x100m relay team of Porchea Carroll, Tiffany Greer, Cassandra Reed and Kandace Tucker also qualified.

On the men's side, six marks were recorded with four in the sprints and two in the field. In the discus, both Vince Mosca and Travis Jones gained entry to the meet. Steve Fitch and Lewis Banda earned times in the 400m and 200m events, respectively, while Jason Barton improved upon his 400m time from a week ago. The men's 4x100m relay team of Banda, Trevell Quinley, Asohka Muhammad and Amoo also qualified for the event.

SUN ANGEL STADIUM
Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium has stood as the home grounds for the Arizona State track and field programs since it opened in 1976. The site of seven conference championship meets and the prestigious Sun Angel Classic, now in its 24th year, the stadium has seen numerous of the world's best including dozens of Olympians from many nations.

NEXT TIME OUT
The Sun Devils hit the road next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles for the UCLA Invitational, April 4-5. The following weekend, April 12, ASU returns home to host the Sun Angel Classic.
