The UNLV men's golf team leads the field after the first 36 holes at the 33rd annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational held at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par-71/7,025 yards). The Rebels shot a 5-under 563 (274-289) to lead Pepperdine (285-284=569) by six strokes.
Two-time defending champion Arizona State, who has won the tournament five of the past six years (1999-2001 and 2003-2004) and 13 times overall, is at 5-over 573 (286-287) and in third place. It shot a tournament-record 43-under 821 (270-278-273) last year, topping its previous record of 40-under 824 in 2003.
Nathan Lashley (68-70) and Kipp Riehle (69-69) of Arizona lead the individual race at 4-under 138, but Riehle is playing as an individual and is not counted in the Wildcat's team score. Brian O'Flaherty of Pepperdine is in third at 139 (71-68).
Sun Devil sophomore Niklas Lemke is one of six players tied for sixth at 1-under 141 (72-69) while teammate Pat Moore shot a 68 in the opening round and is tied for 12th at even 142 (68-74). Jesse Mueller is tied for 24th at 2-over 144 (75-69), Alejandro Canizares is tied for 46th at 6-over 148 (73-75) and Phillip Telliard is tied for 52nd at 7-over 149 (73-76).
Canizares, who tied the tournament record last year with a 16-under 200 (65-66-69), is trying to become just the second repeat champion of the Invitational, joining Phil Mickelson who won medalist honors in 1991 and 1992. Canizares entered the tournament with a 71.38 stroke average and three tournament wins on the year and six in his three-year career.
The Rebels shot a tournament-best 10-under 274 in the opening round, with defending Pac-10 champion Arizona and Brigham Young both shooting 2-under 282.
No UNLV or Pepperdine team has ever won the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, which began in 1973, while no Arizona Wildcat has ever won the individual title.
Defending NCAA champion California is at 25-over 593 (297-296) and in 12th, while 2004 NCAA West Regional champion UCLA is at 11-over 579 (290-289).
ASU also fielded a four-man maroon team, as Charly Simon is tied for 30th at 3-over 145 (70-75). Others on the maroon squad included Lenny Park (tied for 33rd with a 4-over 146 with rounds of 75 and 71), Kendall Critchfield (tied for 46th with a 6-over 148 with rounds of 73 and 75) and Fredrik Andersson (tied for 75th at 15-over 157 with a 75 and 82).
The tournament concludes on Saturday with 18 holes. Tee times begin at 7 a.m., with ASU teeing with UNLV and Pepperdine at 8:30 a.m. The final group will tee at 9:06 a.m.
ASU next competes in the Stanford Invitational on April 16-17.
