TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team completed the first day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday with three Sun Devil women advancing to the next round of their respective events. Lisa Aguilera (3,000m steeplechase), Desiree Davila (5,000m run) and Tiffany Greer (long jump) moved through the preliminary rounds to move into the finals set for Friday.
Aguilera, holder of the fastest steeplechase time in the world this year, cruised to a 10:06.79 to win her heat of the event and finish with the second-fastest time in the event. She will compete Friday evening where she is the favorite to capture her first NCAA championship. Also in the distance ranks, Davila led for much of the race before finishing fifth in the heat (16:28.72) to automatically qualify for the Saturday finals. Jessica Scalzo also ran in the event, finishing 13th in the heat (17:25.56) and 26th overall.
Greer advanced in the long jump by finishing fourth in her heat with a leap of 6.26m and claiming 10th in the overall standings. The Top 12 advanced to the semifinals for three jumps Friday with the Top 9 receiving three additional leaps to determine the national champion and All-Americans.
Luiz Mello was the lone Sun Devil male to advance in an event as he moved out of the preliminaries of the 100m dash with a second-place finish in his heat at 10.70. In the semifinals, also held Wednesday, Mello clocked a 10.65 but finished seventh in his heat to see his ASU career come to a close.
