Notes on ASU Baseball:
The Sun Devils outscored Washington State 39-18 in the three-game series in Pullman... for the second straight weekend the Devils came back to win a Pac-10 series after dropping the series opener... ASU has now won seven straight Pac-10 series dating back to the WSU series in Tempe last year... Sunday's series-clinching victory was highlighted by a season-high 22 runs four home runs and 21 hits... it was ASU's highest scoring game since a 23-1 victory over Creighton on Feb. 16, 2001... the Devils 22-12 start is comparable to the 20-14 start after 34 games during the 1998 College World Series season... ASU is now 5-1 all-time in Pullman... senior center fielder Jon Sheaffer had a solid weekend vs. WSU, going 4-for-8 with five runs scored to improve his season average to a team second best .378 mark... sophomore Andre Ethier had a career day in Sunday's finale, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, five runs scored and five RBI... Ethier leads the team in batting at .381 (48x126) with 11 doubles, four home runs and 36 RBI... he is hitting .452 (14x31) in Pac-10 play after going 4-for-10 with six runs scored vs. the Cougars... ASU's 25 home runs as a team is already seven more than the Sun Devils had all of last year... freshman shortstop Dustin Pedroia added five more hits in the WSU series and is now hitting .341 on the season... Pedroia, along with Ethier, are the only Sun Devils to play in all 34 games this year... Pedroia has made only two errors in the field this year out of 121 total chances for a .983 fielding percentage... he is second on the team with 15 multi-hit games... the Sun Devils have had 18 consecutive different starting lineups, including a youthful Sunday lineup that did not feature a player who had a full season of Pac-10 play under their belt... senior catcher Cesar Castillo seems to have solidified the starting catcher position after starting all three games vs. the Cougars... Castillo was 4-for-11 (.364) for the weekend, including a career-high three hits Sunday... freshman Nick Cadena hit his first career home run in Sunday's 22-4 win... sophomore Ryan McKenna had a big week at the plate by going 5-for-11 (.455) in the four games last week... he recorded his first career home run in a pinch-hit role vs. UNLV and then came up with a big three-run double in ASU's 13-7 come-from-behind win Saturday... ASU has now scored in 409 straight games, extending its NCAA record it set last year... Sunday (April 7), marked the seven-year anniversary of when ASU was last shutout (April 7, 1995 at USC)... the Devils continue their seven-game road trip with three games this weekend against UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
