2003 (Sophomore): Played in only five games in 2003 and was 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and an RBI... sprained his ankle in pregame warm-ups against Long Beach State (1/31) and also suffered an ongoing offseason back injury that let him utilize a medical redshirt... played summer baseball with Northern Ohio in Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League with teammates Eric Van Slyke and Matt Leaf... named first-team All-Great Lakes League while hitting .306 with Northern Ohio... finished sixth in the league with 23 RBI and tied for first with five home runs... hit a solo home run against Team USA.
2002 (Freshman): A pinch-hitter through much of the first part of the season until starting the last 16 games of the year... raised his batting average from .097 on Apr. 26 to its season-ending mark of .239... was 19-for-61 (.311) with 21 of his 28 RBI and five of his six home runs during that stretch of games... led ASU with two multi-home run games... moved into the starting role when right fielder Andre Ethier broke his right thumb at Notre Dame (4/26)... hit three-run home run at Washington State (4/7) for first career home run in first career start... had two home runs and four RBI vs. New Mexico State (4/30)... had another two home run game and a career-high five RBI vs. USC (5/19)... hit .059 (1-for-17) as a pinch-hitter... was a .333 (13-for-39) hitter with runners in scoring position.
High School: A four-year varsity baseball player at Apollo High School in Glendale, Ariz.... coached by Ray Alonzo... a three-time all-state selection, including a first-team selection his junior and senior seasons...
