The Arizona State Sun Devils (3-2) had a great early second-quarter defensive stand on the two-yard line that swung early momentum and helped lead to a 30-12 win over Hawai’i late Saturday night.

True freshman Cardae Mack celebrated his birthday and ran for a 67-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give ASU a 24-6 lead, as the true freshman ended with 154 yards on 13 carries. It marked the most rushing yards by a Sun Devil freshman since Keegan Herring ran for 197 yards vs. Northwestern on Sept. 17, 2005.

ASU started the second quarter with an outstanding defensive stop. UH had first-and-goal at the two-yard line, but a false start, sack, delay of game, incompletion and sack led to a missed 51-yard field goal.

ASU will now play at No. 11 Texas Tech Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT/12:30 p.m. MST on FOX in a battle of the past two Big 12 champions. ASU then hosts Kansas State on Saturday, Oct. 24 in its fourth of six home games in 2026, with Colorado (Nov. 7) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 21) also coming to Mountain America Stadium.

Fourth Quarter (ASU 30, Hawai’i 12)
Mack’s 67-yard touchdown run gave ASU a cushion, but Hawaii bounced back with a nine-play, 75-yard drive punctuated by a 32-yard touchdown pass to cut the gap to 24-12, but ASU stopped the two-point conversion, creating a two-touchdown gap when a PAT would have kept a field goal in play. Harris hauled in his second touchdown of the game with 1:55 in the game, extending ASU’s lead to 30-12, further sealing the game.

Third Quarter (ASU 17, Hawai’i 6)
ASU couldn’t take advantage of a fantastic tipped-ball interception by Kyan McDonald midway through the third, as the Sun Devils had the ball at the Hawai’i 18-yard line, but three straight pass plays didn’t move the ball and Carson Smith missed his first field goal of the year from 37 yards out. UH’s three drives in the third quarter resulted in a punt, interception and then another punt.

Hawai’i got a 31-yard field goal to make it 14-6 heading into the half with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that took 4:40, but ASU put together a solid drive with one timeout and got a 47-yard field goal to make it 17-6 at the half.

First Quarter (ASU 7, Hawai’i 3)
Hawai’i opened the game with a 47-yard Micah Alejado pass to Devin Alves but the drive stalled as Hawai’i took a 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. ASU bounced back with an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Cutter Boley to Reed Harris 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-3. Hawai’i blocked a Sun Devil punt with just over a minute left in the first quarter as the Rainbow Warriors took over at the ASU 27-yard line.
