IRVINE, Calif. – Senior Ilya Kharun walked away from the Toyota National Championships with two gold medals, beating out 9-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel in the 50m fly (22.59) and the 100m fly (50.05) last week in Irvine, California. 

Junior Michael Hochwalt earned a pair of bronze medals in the 200m back (1:57.59) and the 400m IM (4:13.37), setting season bests in both events. 

Kharun placed second in the 200m fly last Tuesday, with a 1:54.59 time. The seven-time NCAA champion set a U.S. Open and meet record in the 50m fly with a personal best time of 22.59, earning gold in his final meet of the summer. 

Sun Devil alum Patrick Sammon earned a silver medal in the 200m free with a personal best time of 1:45.67. Sammon later in the week won bronze in the 100m free in 47.87. Starting August 12, Sammon will represent the United States at the Pac Pacific Swimming Championships swimming in the 100m free. 

Tuesday, July 28 recap:
Finals:
The first night of finals presented a trio of alumni making the podium. Lindsey Looney earned a bronze medal in the 200m fly to open the evening in 2:07.26, then senior Ilya Kharun won a silver in the 200m fly in 1:54.59 for his first final of the week. Junior Michael Hochwalt placed fifth in the ‘B’ final in the 200m fly with a 1:58.04.

In the 100 free, Sammon earned bronze in 47.87 as Grant House placed sixth in 48.30. In the ‘B’ final, Jonny Kulow was a runner-up in 48.77.

Wednesday, July 29 recap:
Prelims:
In the preliminary session, Kharun set a championship record in the 50m fly in 22.77, being the only athlete to swim a sub-23 second time. Hochwalt qualified for the final in the 200m back, clocking in a 1:59.53. 

Sammon qualified for his second final of the week in the 200 free in 1:46.84. 

Finals:
In the final session, Kharun shined in the 50m fly, setting a U.S. Open and meet record in 22.59. The time is tied for the sixth fastest time in history. In the under-18 final, incoming freshman Jake Lloyd won the 50m fly in 24.12.

Sammon was able to get his second medal of the week with a 1:45.67, 200m free. Incoming freshman London Rising was fourth in the U-18 final with a 1:48.79. Hochwalt secured bronze in the 200m back in 1:57.59.

Senior Miriam Sheehan was a B finalist and placed 12th in the women’s 50m fly in 26.80.

Thursday, July 30 recap:
Prelims:
Starting the third day of nationals, Hochwalt swam the fourth-fastest time in the 400IM to get into the ‘A’ final at 4:16.14. Miriam Sheehan swam a personal best in the 100m fly in 59.30 to qualify for the ‘B’ final.

Kharun continued to show his fast swimming in the 100m fly, placing second prelims with a 50.70 time, one of two swimmers with a sub-51 100m fly, with 9-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel.

Alum Andy Dorbzanski qualified for the ‘A’ final with a 27.47, 50m breast. Additionally, incoming freshman Ellie Chalupsky advanced to the 18-under final with a 29.15, women’s 50m back. Alum Adam Chaney managed to advance to the final in the men’s 50m back with a 25.08, which was tied for 7th.

Finals:
To open the evening, Hochwalt was able to earn his second medal of the week with a 4:13.37 time in the 400m IM. Kharun earned his second gold medal of the week in the 100m fly in 50.05, setting a personal best. In the under-18 final, August Vetsch was fifth in 52.58.

Andy Dobrzanski finished sixth in the men’s 50m breast (27.49). Incoming freshman Jake Lloyd was sixth in the under-18 final in the 50m breast, finishing in 28.42. Chaney was eighth in the men’s 50m back final, with a 25.12 time. Chalupsky was eighth in the under-18 final in the women’s 50m back, in 29.64.
