Nu'u Contrades hit two home runs in the Sun Devils' 14-inning loss to Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Lincoln Regional.

LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 22 Sun Devil Baseball took part in an instant classic to open the 2026 NCAA Lincoln Regional, but unfortunately came out on the wrong end of its 14-inning thriller against No. 18 Ole Miss, 7-6, on Friday night.

In a game that didn’t conclude until well after 1 a.m. local time in Lincoln, Neb., the Sun Devils - the region’s No. 3 seed - made pitch after pitch for nine scoreless innings down the stretch of regulation and into extra innings but couldn’t find any runs of their own after the seventh as the Rebels eventually walked it off in the bottom of the 14th.

The story of the game was the Sun Devil pitchers, who strung together nine consecutive scoreless innings after Ole Miss took a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning. Cole Carlon battled back from a tough third and fourth inning that saw Ole Miss plate five runs and take a 6-3 advantage, retiring nine consecutive batters after that before a two-out error in the seventh brought the bullpen into play.

Carlon struck out nine and walked just two over 6.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits but doing his part to let ASU get back into the game.

Taylor Penn, Sean Fitzpatrick and Derek Schaefer got ASU through the final 2.1 innings of regulation - highlighted by Schaefer stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Extra innings was all about Jaden Alba, who put forth what was arguably his best outing as a Sun Devil with 4.0 scoreless innings of work as he escaped jam after jam while stranding five batters, striking out five and giving ASU its chances to take advantage before Ole Miss finally broke through with the walk-off RBI single in the 14th inning.

Nu’u Contrades was electric in his first career postseason appearance after missing last season’s with a hand injury, recording three hits, homering twice - including a game-tying two run shot in the seventh that would eventually send things to extras. He was also electric with a glove, making a game-saving throw to the plate in the 12th inning that would extend the game as well.

Dean Toigo also homered and had three hits for the Sun Devils and Dominic Smaldino recorded a pair of knocks as well. Unfortunately the mass majority of ASU’s offense came from those 2-3-4 batters, who went 8-for-19 while the remainder of the lineup managed just a 2-for-30 effort in the contest.

Turning point
The Sun Devil offense managed just a 2-for-30 effort from players not named Nu’u Contrades, Dean Toigo or Dominic Smaldino. ASU was unable to solve Ole Miss’ bullpen beyond Contrades’ two-run homer that tied that game at 6-6. The Rebels put seven consecutive zeroes on the board after that seventh inning, stranding nine ASU baserunners and holding Arizona State to 4-for-17 with runners on the basepaths and 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Big moment
While there were plenty of opportunities in the regulation, the big one in extra innings was ASU squandering numerous opportunities to plate a go-ahead run. ASU had the leadoff runner aboard in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings but had nothing to show for it when all was said and done. The 11th inning was especially painful as Arizona State had the go-ahead run 90 feet away before an inning-ending strikeout ended the threat. After Dean Toigo’s leadoff single in the 12th inning, the next nine Sun Devils went down in order as ASU was unable to put together a threat down the stretch.

Final straw
After Alba’s Herculean effort through 4.0 innings of work - all in extra innings, the fatigue finally wore through in the bottom of the 14th. A pair of leadoff walks and an infield single loaded the bases with no outs. ASU was able to work the five-infielder defense to perfection in the 12th inning but couldn’t find the magic a second time with a seeing-eye single finding a gap in the defenders for the walk-off hit to send ASU into the elimination bracket on Saturday.

The big number
18 -
The Sun Devil pitchers struck out 18 Ole Miss batters in a battle of the two of the nation’s top strikeout pitching staffs. Unfortunately, while ASU’s big strikeouts proved pivotal throughout the game against one of the most powerful home run hitting teams in the country, it continued quite an insane trend for ASU. The Sun Devils have now struck out 15 or more batters 12 times this season and are 5-7 in those games.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 105 of its 187 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 56 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston extended his reached base streak to 40 consecutive games with his first inning walk.
  • The 14-inning game was ASU’s longest since a 16-inning affair at Washington on April 9, 2021.
  • Entering the game, Cole Carlon had given up just one extra-base hit with runners in scoring position all season. He gave up two in the third inning alone on Friday, a two-RBI double and a two-run homer that turned a 3-1 ASU advantage into a 5-3 Ole Miss one.
  • While ASU struck out 11 times, it was notable as it came at just a 22.4 rate for the game (on 49 ABs) after Ole Miss entered the game with a 34.8 strikeout rate that was the third-best in the nation entering the weekend.
  • ASU entered the game 10th in the country with 91 strikeouts this season with runners in scoring position and two outs. It added four more of those on Saturday.
  • Entering the weekend, Taylor Penn had stranded approximately 87.6 percent of his baserunners, a total good for third in the nation among players with at least 40 innings of work. He added one more to his total on Saturday.
  • Friday’s affair marked just the fourth time this season that the Sun Devils lost while hitting 3 or more home runs.

    Up next
The Sun Devils will now face South Dakota St. tomorrow at 12 p.m. AZT. The game can be streamed on ESPN+ and is available over the Valley airwaves on KDUS-1060.

Inning by inning
First inning
Landon Hairston led off with a walk, then moved over to second on a single from Nu’u Contrades. Dean Toigo followed it up with an RBI-single to give the Sun Devils an early 1-0 lead. Although Contrades was thrown out at third for the first out, Dominic Smaldino singled and advanced to second to put two runners in scoring position. Austen Roellig chipped in with an RBI-groundout to make it 2-0 before Matt Polk struck out to end the top of the frame.

Cole Carlon got started on the mound for Arizona State, quickly retiring the leadoff hitter on a groundout. The next batter hit a solo home run to cut ASU’s lead to 2-1, but Carlon was able to recover by getting a groundout and a strikeout.

Second inning
The only baserunner the Sun Devils got in the second was a two-out single from PJ Moutzouridis, who was left stranded as Hairston flew out for the third out.

Carlon continued his outing on the mound, getting a groundout to third to start out the inning. A double down the left field line followed, but Carlon issued back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Third inning
Contrades added to the Sun Devils’ tally with a leadoff home run to left center. A strikeout and a groundout followed before Roellig reached on a  two-out walk. Polk popped out down the right field line to close out the top of the third.

A single and a walk started the inning for Carlon, before a groundout down the third base line moved both runners into scoring position. With one out, the Rebels tied the game on a two-RBI double. The very next hitter crushed a two-run home run down the right field line to give Ole Miss a 5-3 lead. Carlon was able to get a strikeout and flyout to limit the damage in the third.

Fourth inning
The Sun Devils couldn’t get anything going in the top of the fourth, going down in order.

After a leadoff walk, Carlon struck out the next hitter. A wild pitch allowed the runner to move to second, and, after another strikeout, a single through the right side brought home another run for Ole Miss to make it 6-3. The runner at first was caught stealing to end the frame.

Fifth inning
After two quick outs, Toigo launched a home run to right field to make it a 6-4 ballgame. Back-to-back walks from Smaldino and Roellig, followed by a wild pitch, put runners into scoring position for the Sun Devils, but a groundout from Polk ended the threat.

Carlon made quick work in the bottom of the fifth, retiring the side on a strikeout and two groundouts.

Sixth inning
Another 1-2-3 inning came for the Sun Devils as the bottom of the order was retired in order.

Pitching into the sixth, Carlon delivered another three-up, three-down frame.

Seventh inning
Hairston worked a walk to kick off the seventh, then Contrades tied the game with his second home run of the night, a line drive over the wall in left center. The next three hitters went down in order for the Sun Devils, leaving the score knotted at six.

Retiring the first two batters in the frame, Carlon almost had a clean inning, but a groundball to third led to a baserunner as Roellig bobbled the ball on the transfer and the runner was safe. The Sun Devils went to the bullpen, calling on Taylor Penn. Facing Ole Miss’ two-hole hitter, Penn punched him out to keep it a tie game.

Eighth inning
After a groundout opened the frame, pinch hitter Dominic Longo laced a single into center field. Briggs grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out, and Moutzouridis fouled out to close out the eighth.

Arizona State brought in Sean Fitzpatrick from the bullpen, and after allowing a leadoff single, Fitzpatrick got a flyout to center for the first out. Another single prompted a call to the bullpen, and Derek Schaefer was called on. He got a quick flyout before issuing a walk to load the bases. Schaefer was able to shut down the threat with an inning-ending strikeout.

Ninth inning
The top of the Sun Devil order was retired in succession in the top of the ninth.

Schaefer returned to the mound for Arizona State, striking out the first hitter before allowing a walk. A groundout moved the runner over to second, but Schaefer struck out the next hitter to send the game to extra innings.

Tenth inning
Smaldino led off the inning with a single, but was thrown out when Roellig grounded into a double play. Polk flew out to end the frame.

Jaden Alba was the next pitcher out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils. He retired the first hitter on a pop up before allowing two baserunners on two consecutive infield singles. Alba was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

Eleventh inning
Longo reached on a walk to start the frame, then moved over to second on a sac bunt from Briggs. A flyout from Moutzouridis put Longo at third before Hairston was intentionally walked. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, Contrades struck out.

Alba returned to the mound and got the first batter to fly out to right. Roellig snagged a line drive for the second out before Alba allowed a walk. However, Alba was able to strike out the next hitter and send the game to the twelfth.

Twelfth inning
Despite a leadoff single from Dean Toigo, Arizona State was unable to get anything started, with a strikeout and two fielder’s choice groundouts coming after.

After a flyout to the leadoff batter, Alba allowed a double down the right field line. A wild pitch put the winning run on third base, prompting the Sun Devils to bring Longo in from center field for a five-man infield. The next batter sent a groundball to second, and Contrades was able to throw the runner out at home. A groundout to third ended the inning.

Thirteenth inning
Two flyouts and a groundout were all the Sun Devils could muster in the top of the frame.

Alba continued his relief effort, retiring the first hitter on a groundout. A strikeout followed, before Ole Miss picked up a baserunner on a two-out single to right field. Alba was able to strand the runner with his second strikeout of the inning.

Fourteenth inning
The top of the order for ASU went down in order.

Back-to-back walks opened the frame, before an infield single loaded the bases for Ole Miss. A single through the right side ended the game as the Rebels walked it off, 7-6.

Quotables

Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
"In my five years here, I don't think I've been prouder of my guys and my team than I was tonight. Obviously, the score didn't end up in our favor, but our guys battled and left their guts on the field, and to me, that's all I can ask for as a head coach. Guys played as well as they've played all year long, guys made big plays when they had to, swung the bats great, made plays, everything that I could ask our guys to do, they did it tonight. And, man, two great teams went at each other, and I think fairly evenly matched teams that went at each other for 14 innings, and at the end of the day, they got the big hit when they needed to, there in the bottom half of the inning. But I'm super proud of our guys and the way they battled and competed tonight. Biggest challenge of our life now, we gotta bounce back and be ready to go for a day game tomorrow, so it is what it is, but I'm super proud of our guys."

On the contributions that Contrades brings to the lineup
"He’s on my Mount Rushmore of favorites, just a phenomenal kid, and I would take a team full of him. The way he plays, goes about it, the kid’s been essentially on one leg the majority of the year, playing and gutting it out, and putting up a heck of a year on one leg. To play through that, the mental toughness to play through that and still be as successful as he’s been all year long, heart and soul of our team, hands down. There’s a reason he’s our captain, because he goes out there, and regardless of how he feels, he puts his body on the line every day. And it’s not surprising that he steps up in big situations and has a game like he did today.”

On the challenges of managing the long game
"We knew that if you lose the first one, it becomes awful tough. We laid our cards on the table and tried to win this one, go down with our best, and obviously our ace went tonight, so did theirs, and they were kind of at a stalemate after the seventh inning. It was tied up there, and we went with (Taylor) Penn to get out of that inning. Their guy had taken Carlon deep once, and I thought Cole was running on fumes and T-Penn came in and got that guy out. (Sean) Fitzpatrick did a good job with the lefties the next inning, and then we had to bring (Derek) Schaefer in and use him for a couple, and after that we went with our third starter in Jaden Alba, and we’re going to see how long we could ride him. He was starting to get a little bit fatigued there at the end, but you start using too many more guys, you don’t have much left for the rest of this thing. Jaden was still throwing the ball great, so I had no problem running him back out there, and we knew he was going to have to give us all he got, and he did. He left it all on the field, so we’re going to have to bounce back tomorrow, and hopefully (Kole) Klecker can give us some length tomorrow, and rest those guys up for them to be ready to go again the next day, if we can get the W tomorrow.”

On Jaden Alba’s outing in relief
"He’s a guy that, second half of the year, really turned it on and became the pitcher he is now, and he left everything on the field tonight. I, as a head coach, cannot ask him to do anything more than he did tonight. He threw the ball outstanding, made big pitches when he had to. Just super proud of the way he threw the ball and executed in those big moments. Obviously, we look at the leadoff walks there in the 14th, but that kid was out there gutting it out and doing everything he could to help us win, and gave us an opportunity to win.”

Infielder Nu'u Contrades
On the playoff experience
"The atmosphere is great. We came up a little short, but guys played their asses off, and the best part is we have a game tomorrow, so we're just gonna lay it all out there tomorrow. Just try and do our job."
