Situational hitting woes plague Baseball in 13-6 loss to Oklahoma StateSituational hitting woes plague Baseball in 13-6 loss to Oklahoma State

PHOENIX -- No. 16 Sun Devil Baseball had baserunners all night but didn’t have the at-bats to bring them home as it dropped its Big 12 series against Oklahoma State with a 13-6 loss on Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Arizona State (33-17, 16-10 Big 12) dropped a series before a Sunday for the first time since getting swept in the final series of the regular season last year, ironically also against the Cowboys. It was just ASU’s second series loss of this season (10-2 in weekend series overall) as Oklahoma State extended its winning streak in the series to 11 consecutive games.

The Sun Devils went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 batters while Oklahoma State (33-17, 16-10 Big 12) homered seven times in the rout.

Dominic Smaldino recorded his first multi-home run game of his career while Sam Myers added three hits and an RBI. Nu’u Contrades also tacked on his 15th homer of the season.

Turning point
In both the first and second innings of the contest, ASU loaded the bases with less than two outs. The first three batters of the contest reached and the Sun Devils had three on with one out in the second. Arizona State managed to plate just one run despite those threats, something that would prove to be thematic over the remainder of the game as the Sun Devils were simply less than adequate with runners in scoring position over the course of the evening.

Big moment
Dominic Smaldino recorded his first multi-homer game with his two-run opposite field shot in the third that gave ASU a 3-2 advantage in the third. Oklahoma State - which entered the weekend second in the country in home runs - showed exactly why in the top of the fourth inning as it recorded four home runs to account for all six of the team’s runs in the frame as four of the Cowboys’ first nine hits of the game left the park. It was the first time ASU allowed at least three homers in an inning since… last season at Oklahoma State at almost the exact time in the season. It was the first time allowing four homers in an inning since the Minnesota series last season as well.

Final straw
Trailing by five, the Sun Devils still had their chances to cut the gap as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of that fourth inning before grounding into their third inning-ending double play of the game. They would stand another pair in the fifth, one in the sixth and had perhaps its best chance to get back into things in the seventh. A Sam Myers RBI single - his third hit of the game - was ASU’s first hit of the game with a runner in scoring position after starting 0-for-10. A Briggs walk followed that as, yet again, ASU loaded the bases with just one out and trailing 8-4. A swinging bunt led to an easy out at home and Hairston had an inning-ending ground out to squander the threat as Oklahoma State responded with three runs in the top of the eighth to effectively put the nail in the coffin.

The big number
1 - Arizona State managed just a single hit with runners in scoring position, despite having 13 opportunities to do so (.076). ASU stranded 12 runners on the bases, which doesn’t include three runners wiped out by inning-ending double plays.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 96 of its 171 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 56 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston extended his reached base streak to 33 consecutive games with his leadoff single. Hairston recorded a hit to leadoff a game for the 21st time (in 50 games) - the second-highest total in the country.
  • In total, Arizona State pitching struck out 17 Cowboys. The Sun Devils have at least 15 strikeouts in ten games this season. They have double-digit strikeouts in 33 of 50 games this season. In one of the more bizarre stats you will see, however, ASU is just 4-6 in games where it strikes out at least 15 in a game.
  • It was the first multi-homer game of Smaldino’s career.
  • Since starting the game on the bench in ASU’s series finale at BYU, Smaldino has recorded multiple hits in six of the last nine games, homering in four of those.

    Up next

Inning by inning
First inning
Jaden Alba started the game for the Sun Devils, where he gave up a leadoff walk. Beckett Zavorek turned a double play behind Alba in the next at bat before Alba struck out the next batter for a scoreless inning.

In the first two at-bats, Landon Hairston and Nu’u Contradres each singled before Dean Toigo wore one to load the bases with no outs. No runs were scored for ASU after an infield fly and a double play closed out the inning.

Second inning
Alba returned to the mound and went three up, three down to end the frame.

Dominic Smaldino got the Sun Devils on the board first with a solo shot to make the game 1-0. Sam Myers and Brody Briggs each followed that up with singles of their own before moving into scoring position on a sac bunt by Zavorek. An intentional walk was issued to Hairston to load the bases with one out, before Contrades grounded into a double play.

Third inning
Despite striking out the first batter he faced, Alba gave up a single and a double to put runners into scoring position. Alba struck out the next batter, but a double in the next at bat allowed both runners to score, giving the Cowboys a 2-1 lead. Two consecutive walks loaded the bases, but the Sun Devils escaped the jam on a fly out.

Michel singled with two outs before being driven in by Smaldino on a home run to put ASU up 3-2. Myers went down on a fly out for the third out of the inning.

Fourth inning
In his fourth inning of work, Alba let up a single, which scored on a two run home run. With two outs, back-to-back solo shots by the Cowboys extended their lead, 6-3. After issuing a walk, Alba was relieved by Taylor Penn, who gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, making the score 8-3. A single put a runner on for OSU, but a strike out ensured no more runs scored.

Briggs walked to open the frame and was moved up on a single from Zavorek. With one out, Contrades reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, but Toigo grounded into a double play, leaving the runners stranded.

Fifth inning
Penn returned to the game and pitched to the minimum, striking out two and erasing a walk with an inning-ending pick-off.

Roellig singled to get the inning started for Arizona State, then moved up to third on a two-out single from Myers. A foul out from Briggs left both runners on base, keeping the Sun Devils trailing, 8-3.

Sixth inning
Back on the mound, Penn sent the OSU batters down in order via groundout and two strikeouts.

A new pitcher entered the game for the Cowboys, issuing a walk to the first batter he faced in Zavorek. Zavorek made his way to third on two groundouts, but was left on base after a foul out.

Seventh inning
The next man out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils was Eli Buxton. Buxton recorded a strikeout to open the inning, but walked the next batter who was able to advance to third on a wild pitch and a fly out. Another strikeout concluded the scoreless inning.

The Cowboys called the next guy out of the bullpen and immediately gave up a walk to Roellig. Michel made his way to first on a single, which moved Roellig over to third. A one out single by Myers scored Roellig to put the Sun Devils within four. Briggs reached first on a walk to load the bases once again for Arizona State. A fielder’s choice by Zavorek put out Michel, but left the bases full with two outs. Hairston grounded out to end the inning, leaving ASU trailing 8-4.

Eighth inning
Despite striking out the first batter, Buxton let up a solo shot to put the Cowboys up 9-4. Back-to-back walks forced a pitching change for the Sun Devils, with Brady Louck coming in. A fielder’s choice put runners on the corners for OSU. With two outs, two singles from the Cowboys allowed two runs to score, signaling a pitching change for the Sun Devils. Austin Musso was the next guy out of the bullpen, where he walked the next batter to load the bases, but was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.

Contrades hit a leadoff home run to start the frame, followed up by a triple from Toigo. A sac fly from Coen Niclai allowed Toigo to score, making the score 11-6. Two fly outs ended the inning.

Ninth inning
Musso gave up two home runs within the first three batters he faced in the ninth to extend the Cowboys’ lead to 13-6. A second strikeout and a fly out snuffed the frame.

The Sun Devils went down in order to end the game with a final score of 13-6.

Quotables

Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening Statement
"We did a great job of getting runners on base and did a poor job of getting them in. Especially early, I think we had a chance to really set the tone early. Bases loaded, nobody out in the 1st. Bases loaded, one out in the 2nd. I think bases loaded again in the 3rd, the whole slew of runners after that, we just weren't able to once again come up with big hits to put up crooked numbers early on and really set a tone. On the flip side, they got pitches to hit and they didn't miss. Those guys hit the ball at the ballpark, ball was carrying tonight again, wind blowing out, ball jumping, and there were a couple of fly balls that carried out, but for the most part they hit some balls very hard that went a long way, and we know that's their game and we fall behind hitters against good hitters, they don't miss and then they're going to punish us. So bottom line, these first two games have not gone as we planned against them, but just talking to the guys, playoff baseball starts tomorrow. We're in that position to where every game is a playoff game, and we have to start playing as such. We have no more cushion. We have no more leeway. We have to lock in and focus better than we're doing right now because it's not good enough.”

On what the message was to the team after the loss
"The focus has to be better from a standpoint of, you put up 14 hits and we have, I don't know how many base runners. We had a lot of base runners left on base. So again, we did a great job of setting the table and having a pretty good arm. Stormy Rhodes is a good arm that has a lot of sync and run on his ball, and we knew that going in. And we did a good job setting the table, but then we chase below the zone when it's time to cash in and hit into double plays and get jammed and chase pitches in off the plate. We didn't get to those situations by doing that. So why, why all of a sudden when we get runners in scoring position, do we climb up and do something different instead of focusing on what we do best. That was the message to me. I think everyone's trying, maybe they're trying too hard, instead of just letting the game come to them and stay focused and locked into the process more than the result.”

On what he has seen this season from team captains Nu’u Contrades and Sean Fitzpatrick
"Well, it's times like this where those guys shine through. I talked with them after the game today and just reminded them that they are the glue that's got to hold us together. The coaches, we can sit up here and preach all day long and give messages to the guys and hopefully it's well received. I think it has been for the most part, but at the end of the day those two guys are the glue in that locker room that it's got to keep the vibe going. They've got to keep the momentum going and we can't afford to fold up our tents and go home right now. It's just not acceptable and we've worked too hard. They're too talented of a group to do that, but ultimately, it's got to come down to their buy-in and their willingness to want to do this. I couldn't want it anymore for them. I don't sleep at night. I'm up thinking of how can I get more out of these guys and my heart is at Arizona State. I love this place like one of my own kids for Pete's sake, and it affects me when we don't do as well as I expect us to. And I want to get this right, but not for me. I want to get it right for those young men in there and have them experience what this is all about, and they've worked too hard and they're too good of a team to allow just a couple of games here to allow us to spiral off course, so their leadership is going to be extremely necessary here, at this last stretch.”

On Sam Myers' performance lately
"Well, Sammy Myers, you tip your hat to a kid like that. He had really not deserved to sit. He's been playing well and, with the emergence of Matt Polk, Polky wasn't giving away that job. He just was playing too well to take him out of the lineup, and he had tweaked his hammy last night, which is why he wasn't in there today. Sam Myers was next man up and he took advantage again. So just put together some solid at bats and gave us a nice shot in the arm there offensively and yeah, he's done a good job. When you don't play for, you know, a couple of weeks or in his case, maybe even a little longer, to jump right back in there and not skip a beat, that's an impressive thing to do.”
