PHOENIX – No. 20 Sun Devil Baseball didn’t have the magic to rally from a sizable hole for the second night in a row, falling to UNLV by a score of 7-5 on Wednesday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

After rallying from seven down last night on the road at Grand Canyon, Arizona State (24-10) again found itself in a five-run hole tonight but found its late-inning rally cut short against the Runnin’ Rebels (19-14).

Landon Hairston remained on his tear with two doubles and an RBI with Dean Toigo and Matt Polk also adding multi-hit games. However, ASU had a paltry one hit with runners in scoring position while stranding eight and that proved to be the difference in the game.

Eli Buxton was a bright spot for the Sun Devil bullpen with his 2.0 innings of work as he recorded five of his six outs by strikeout. Freshman Austin Musso made his first career start and was largely efficient over three innings of work with the only damage coming on a two-run homer that barely cleared the left field wall in the third inning.

Turning point
Freshman Austin Musso gave the Sun Devils a solid three innings in his first collegiate start with the lone blemish coming on a two-run wall-scraper in the third innings that put ASU in a 2-1 hole but well within striking distance. Things came undone when the Sun Devils went to the bullpen in the fourth as UNLV got a single and HBP to lead off the frame that was immediately followed by a two-RBI double that made it 4-1. A lackadaisical effort at second base on a soft ground ball right through the wickets plated another run and the Sun Devils quickly found themselves in a 5-1 hole.

Big moment
Like last night the Sun Devil offense came alive late, but was unable to find the critical hits it would need down that stretch. Landon Hairston’s RBI double in the seventh followed by his score on a passed ball brought ASU within 6-4 with another runner at second and just one out. But a strikeout and flyout stranded that run there. The Sun Devils had another golden opportunity in the eighth on Dominic Longo’s one-out RBI double that brought ASU within a run and had the tying run at second with just one out. Again, however, a pair of strikeouts ended the threat as all three outs in the frame came on swinging punchouts - two by pinch hitters.

Final straw
UNLV made the Sun Devils pay in the top of the ninth with a leadoff double that Hairston looked to have made an impressive catch on in left center field but his collision with the wall jarred the ball loose and the Rebels were able to manufacture one more run of insurance to make it 7-5. Dean Toigo notched a two-out single to keep ASU alive in the bottom half of the frame and brought the tying run to the plate but another strikeout squashed the Sun Devils’ second attempt at a monumental rally.

The big number
1-for-12 -
The Sun Devils were, quite bluntly, terrible with runners in scoring position on Wednesday. ASU managed just one hit on 12 opportunities for a paltry .083 average. UNLV was not much better with just a 1-for-10 mark in the category but the chances were there for the Sun Devils to have a better offensive output than was put forth while stranding eight baserunners in the contest.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 66 of its 113 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 39 innings with at least three runs scored, 24 with at least four and 19 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston has 52 extra base hits over his last 61 games after recording his 14th and 15th doubles of the season. In his first 27 games as a Sun Devil, he had just one.
  • The game was Hairston’s 10th-straight with an extra-base hit.
  • Hairston extended his hitting streak to 17-consecutive games with his fifth-inning double.
  • Hairston now has 54 RBIs - all coming as the leadoff batter in the Sun Devil lineup in 34 games. For perspective, that total would have placed him sixth in the nation for the SEASON among leadoff batters a year ago with the national leader - Murray State’s Jonathan Hogart - recording 65 total over 61 games.
  • ASU stuck out double digit batters for the 21st time this season.

"I think we're in a stretch of long games here where we've played a lot of baseball and maybe broken down a little bit, but that's an excuse if you ask me. We just have to keep pushing and getting better."

Willie Bloomquist on the the team feeling the long stretch of games

Inning by inning
First inning
In his first career start, Austin Musso worked around an early baserunner to toss a scoreless inning.

PJ Moutzouridis singled before advancing to second on a single by Dean Toigo. After reaching third on a flyout from Dominic Smaldino, Moutzouridis scored on a single from Matt Polk, and Toigo moved up to third. Despite a walk being issued to Garret Michel to load the bases, all three baserunners were left stranded to end the inning with the Sun Devils up 1-0.

Second inning
Musso got back to work in the second inning, giving up two singles but leaving both runners stranded on a strikeout and two lineouts.

Despite a walk and hit by pitch, the Sun Devils were unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning.

Third inning
Back on the mound for the Sun Devils, Musso gave up a walk followed by a two run home run to give UNLV a 2-1 lead. Despite this, Musso was able to end the inning with no further damage with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Back-to-back walks opened the inning for the Sun Devils, but no runs scored after the Sun Devils went down by a strikeout and double play.

Fourth inning
Josh Butler was the first man out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, giving up a single and a hit by pitch, followed by a two-run double to make it 4-1. An error allowed another run to score, extending the Rebels’ lead to four runs. Butler then sent the next three batters down in order via a strikeout and two flyouts to end the frame.

Arizona State couldn’t get anything going in the fourth, going down in order.

Fifth inning
Butler, back on the mound, gave up two consecutive singles, where both runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Brady Louck was called in from the bullpen, hitting the first batter he faced to load the bases. A wild pitch brought in another run, before Louck got a strikeout and a groundout to limit the damage to one run, down 6-1.

Landon Hairston opened the frame for the Sun Devils, doubling to center field before advancing to third on a flyout by Moutzouridis. Hairston came around to score on an RBI-groundout from Toigo. Smaldino struck out to end the frame, trailing 6-2.

Sixth inning
After a single opened up the inning, the Sun Devils went to the bullpen again, bringing in Eli Buxton. Buxton struck out the first batter he faced, but a wild pitch allowed the runner to advance to second. The runner was then picked off for the third out.

The Sun Devils went down in order to end the inning.

Seventh inning
Buxton went back to work, striking out the side.

Brody Briggs walked to open up the bottom of the seventh. Beckett Zavorek reached base on a fielder’s choice before he scored on an RBI-double from Hairston. An error moved Hairston over to third, and Moutzouridis walked on four pitches. After UNLV brought in a new pitcher, a passed ball allowed Hairston to score, making it a 6-4 ballgame. Smaldino then flew out to end the frame.

Eighth inning
Finn Edwards came on to pitch for the Sun Devils, giving up a leadoff double. A wild pitch moved the runner to third, and a walk put a runner on first. A bizarre fielder’s choice led to a double play, as the runner on third was caught in a pickle between third and home and tagged out, before Longo tagged out the runner going from first to third. A strikeout ended the scoreless inning.

Matt Polk reached on a single and scored on an RBI-double from Longo, cutting the deficit to just one run. Coen Niclai and Zavorek both struck out to end the frame.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer was the next guy up for the Sun Devils, giving up a leadoff double to start the ninth. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch before Schaefer walked the batter. A sac bunt allowed the runner to score, increasing UNLV’s lead, 7-5. Fortunately, Schaefer was able to retire the next two batters via strikeout and a groundout.

Despite a single by Toigo, the Sun Devils were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, falling 7-5.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“We lost. That was not what we had drawn up. We came out a little bit flat again for the second day in a row until about the 5th or 6th inning before we started playing with a little bit more energy and, and just wasn't enough. Too little, too late, we couldn't pull it off today. We didn't play very good defense for the most part, had some routine plays that we kicked around and offensively just didn't come with that mindset that I'd like to see out of our guys. So part of it, I think we're in a stretch of long games here where we've played a lot of baseball and maybe broken down a little bit, but that's an excuse if you ask me. We just have to keep pushing and getting better and, and have a light day tomorrow and then we have four more, four straight in a row, here at Muni. We have to pick it up, pick up the energy a little bit and be better than we were tonight.”

On Austin Musso’s first career start
“That was great. I thought Austin threw the ball outstanding and got us off to a decent start there. He gave up a two run homer, but UNLV can swing the bats a little bit. I mean they're a very capable offensive team that has put up a lot of runs and we knew coming in tonight that we were going to have to score some runs probably in order to win this game and we wanted to get Austin on the mound, and he's a big part of our future and a big part of our season this year. I think that we have to find that guy that can hammer down, get another starter that can give us length, and I thought he threw the ball outstanding aside from the one mistake that we gave up the home run there. I thought he threw the ball really well.”

On the bullpen’s showing as a whole
“We seem to have been that one inning that that plagues us a little bit and if we can eliminate that, we've been pretty good alongside that one inning that that seems to kind of bite us and today was a little bit of that during the 4th, we kind of gave up a stretch of runs there where we couldn't put up a zero for, for a little bit. But as a whole, the bullpen's been just fine, but I want to be better than just fine.”

On the struggle with runners in scoring position
“Well, I think it was the 1st or 2nd inning, the 1st inning, we had bases loaded there with two outs, and (Dominic) Longo scalded a ball to shortstop, he smoked it. You can't ask for anything more there. He hit it hard, but kind of right at him, and that's kind of more bad luck, I guess. But we've had plenty of other situations where we just haven't been able to come up with that big hit or drive the ball in the gap or something like that and really put a lot of pressure on the opposing team early. The bases loaded situations that we can hit a gap there and jump up 4-0 in the first, then we just keep tacking on and putting them away, but we just haven't been able to come up with that big hit.”
