TEMPE – No. 13 Sun Devil Beach Volleyball is back on the road this weekend, playing in the COE Challenge from April 10-11 in San Luis Obispo and squaring off against three ranked teams.

Arizona State (16-9) has a big weekend ahead at the COE (Center of Effort) Challenge. Friday, ASU will have a rematch with No. 9 Cal in the morning before facing host team No. 6 Cal Poly in the afternoon. On Saturday, the Sand Devils get another rematch, this time against No. 2 UCLA. The last dual on Saturday will be against a team from the other pool at this tournament, depending on how the Sun Devils do against the three in their pool. That time is to be determined.

The tournament site can be found on Cal Poly's website.

Sun Devil outlook
No. 13 Arizona State (16-9)

  • ASU went 3-1 in its last home weekend. Arizona State picked up a win over Ottawa University-Arizona to open up the Sparky Invitational before dropping a close 3-2 dual to No. 13 GCU. The Sun Devils rebounded with a 2-0 day on Saturday, sweeping FIU and beating No. 15 Stetson.
  • Against ranked teams this season, Arizona State is 8-9. Head Coach Kristen Glattfelder now has 26 ranked wins with ASU.
  • Two pairs are on four-match winning streaks. The top pair of redshirt seniors Ava Kirunchyk and Samaya Morin and the duo of senior McKenna Flaherty and junior Kristin Gilmour each swept all of their matches and have won four in a row with their partners, dating back to March 28. There was one dual at the Sparky Invitational in which these pairs did not play together.
  • Kirunchyk and Morin now own a team best 18-6 record as a pair. Individually, Kirunchyk has 19 wins, also a team best.
  • With her win against FIU, Kirunchyk reached the 50 career win mark.
  • Friday, senior Daniella Kensinger secured her 75th career win with the victory over OUAZ. She also moved into the eighth place on the Sun Devil career wins leaderboard with a victory over FIU on Saturday.
  • Arizona State now has 11 sweeps this season, the most of any season in program history.

Opponent outlook
No. 9 Cal (18-7)

  • The Golden Bears are coming off a 4-0 weekend with two wins each over UC Davis and San Jose State.
  • In 2025, Cal had a 27-10 record, losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Texas.
  • The Sand Devils are 4-13 all-time against the Golden Bears, with the most recent meeting coming earlier this season at the East Meets West Invitational. Cal won the dual 4-1.

No. 6 Cal Poly (21-5)

  • At the Best in the West Tournament over the weekend, the Mustangs went 1-3 with losses to No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 UCLA and No. 4 USC. Their only win was against No. 10 Long Beach State.
  • Cal Poly had a 30-win season in 2025, going 31-8. The squad lost in the Big West Championship Final to Long Beach State. The Mustangs made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to eventual champion TCU in the semifinals.
  • Arizona State is winless against Cal Poly, with the Mustangs having won all six meetings between the two teams. The most recent was in 2025 at the Sun Devil Classic with Cal Poly winning 4-1. Notably, Cal Poly also knocked ASU out of the NCAA Tournament in 2024.

No. 2 UCLA (21-4)

  • The Bruins had a 3-1 weekend at the Best in the West Tournament, beating Cal Poly, USC and Long Beach State, and only losing to No. 1 Stanford.
  • UCLA went 32-7 in 2025, losing in the NCAA Tournament semifinals to LMU.
  • The Sand Devils have never beaten the Bruins, with all 14 matchups going the way of UCLA. The Bruins swept the Sun Devils earlier this season at the East Meets West Invitational.
