Sun Devil Baseball weekly preview: Apr. 7 - Apr. 18Sun Devil Baseball weekly preview: Apr. 7 - Apr. 18

PHOENIX - No. 20 Sun Devil Baseball had a successful week that was filled with a win over San Diego State and a road series victory over the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona State started the week with a home game against the Aztecs and took care of business with a win. They then headed to Tucson, where they took the series over Arizona over the weekend. The Maroon & Gold will look to carry their momentum this week as they face three different teams: Grand Canyon, UNLV, and Utah.

The Sun Devils started this past week with a 6-2 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs. Landon Hairston, last week's Big 12 Player of the Week and Golden Spikes National Player of the Week, continued to be lights out, hitting two home runs in the game. This was his third multi-home run game of the season as he continues his breakout season. Colin Linder also helped Arizona State on the pitching side, holding San Diego State to four scoreless innings to keep ASU in front.

Arizona State had a couple of days off before heading down to Tucson on Thursday to face off with in-state foe the Arizona Wildcats. In the opening game of the series, Hairston continued his offensive surge, recording three hits that included his first triple of the season. A three-run seventh inning, highlighted by Nu'u Contrades driving in two runs off a double, helped the Sun Devils take the first game of the series, 6-4.

In Friday's matchup, starting pitcher Cole Carlon had his best outing as a Sun Devil. He held the Wildcats scoreless through six innings of work while also striking out a career-high 12 batters in his fantastic start. Hairston continued his wonderful season by having his eighth straight multi-hit game. Arizona State was up 4-0 entering the seventh inning before the Wildcats tallied up seven runs in the seventh, holding to beat the Sun Devils 7-4.

In the series finale, ASU's offense was on a roll. The bottom of the lineup was electric as the team's 6-9 hitters went 11-for-18, collecting eight RBIs and nine runs scored. Matt Polk and Dominic Smaldino each had career-best four hit games, with Smaldino also recording a career-best six RBIs in the game. Hairston's multi-hit game streak came to an end, as he only recorded one hit, but he made it count, sending it out of the park, for his 18th home run of the year. The home run also extended his streak of games with an extra base hit to eight as the Sun Devils won the game, 15-6, and secured the 2-1 series victory.

Arizona State will look to continue its winning ways, starting with a short trip across town to Grand Canyon on Tuesday. The Sun Devils will then head back to Phoenix Municipal Stadium for a matchup with UNLV on Wednesday before resuming Big 12 play with a weekend series against Utah.

The Lopes are coming off a solid week, taking two of three games in their road series against Fresno State. This will be the Lopes' second of three games against the Sun Devils this season. The first, on March 17, saw the Sun Devils walk-off the Lopes in 10 innings, 4-3.

The Rebels will look to bounce back after losing their last two games, both against New Mexico. This will be the second and last time that UNLV will play ASU this season. The previous matchup was a thriller, as the Sun Devils held a large lead going into the late innings, but the Rebels mounted a big comeback, falling just short. Arizona State took home the 12-11 victory.

The Utes are looking to getting back in the win column after being swept in their road series by Kansas in their road series. They will first take on Utah Tech in St. George on Tuesday before traveling to Phoenix for their road series against Arizona State.
