Landon Hairston slides in safely to home plate in the second game of the series with Arizona on Friday, April 3.

TUCSON – No. 25 Sun Devil Baseball dropped game two of the series with Arizona on Friday night.

Arizona State (22-9) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but a seven-run seventh inning pushed the Wildcats over the top and allowed them to even the series. It spoiled the great work of Cole Carlon, who arguably delivered his best start as a Sun Devil. The left-hander put together sixth scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 12.

Landon Hairston continued his torrid pace at the plate, collecting a multi-hit game for the eighth straight contest. The bat of PJ Moutzouridis came to life when the Sun Devils needed it, as he recorded his third three-hit day of the season and second multi-RBI effort.

The Sun Devils were in control for a majority of the contest, but the Wildcat offense erupted in the seventh inning. Arizona scored all seven of their runs in the frame off three different Sun Devil pitchers. The 7-4 defeat is only ASU's second in five road contests in Big 12 play.

Turning point
ASU boasted a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning with a runner on second and one out. A ground ball to shortstop resulted in an error from Moutzouridis, allowing the run to score and the runner to reach base. The rest of the inning snow-balled from their, as the Wildcats took advantage of the defensive miscue.

Big moment
Left-handed reliever Sean Fitzpatrick was called upon for the second straight night. He managed to throw 1.2 scoreless innings last night, but was not able to replicate his effort tonight. In a lefty-on-lefty matchup, Arizona outfielder Andrew Cain knocked a two-run, game-tying single.

Final straw
Just two batters following the big moment and with Fitzpatrick still on the mound, the Wildcats used a second two-run single to take their first lead of the game. This time it was Maddox Mihalakis with the key hit, giving Arizona a 6-4 lead.

The big number
.100 - Arizona State finished just 1-of-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position tonight. They left a total of nine runners on base and were just 2-of-14 with runners on.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 60 of its 105 half-innings with runs this season.
  • Landon Hairston has 48 extra base hits over his last 58 games after hitting a triple for the second consecutive night. In his first 27 games as a Sun Devil, he had just one. He entered the weekend with one career triple and has two in Tucson this series.
  • The 2-for-4 effort gives Hairston multiple hits in eight straight games. He is 19-for-32 (.593) with seven home runs and 17 RBIs during that incredible stretch at the plate.
  • Cole Carlon finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts in six innings of brilliant baseball.
  • It was the fourth double-digit strikeout peformance of Carlon's career. Three have come this season. Two have come against Arizona, as he had his first career 10+ K game against Arizona in 2025.
  • He now has 67 strikeouts in 41.1 innings pitched and is just 13 shy of 200 career strikeouts (currently at 187).
  • PJ Moutzouridis finished the contest 3-for-4, recording his third three-hit game of the season.
  • The Sun Devil pitchers recorded double-digit strikeouts as a staff for the 20th time this season.

    Up next
The Sun Devils finish the series in Tucson with a game on Saturday night against Arizona. The game is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN2. The game will be available over the local airwaves on KDUS 1060 AM with Tim Healey and Max Rossiter on the call.

Inning by inning
First inning
Just like in game one, the Sun Devils struck first with an early offensive attack. Hairston led off the game with a single and came around to score on a couple of ground outs. ASU was able to add on with a second run in the inning after a pair of walks and a fielder's choice scored Roellig.

Cole Carlon got the start on the mound, the eighth of the season. He showed signs of what was to come, setting down the Wildcats in order highlighted by a pair of strikeouts.

Second inning
After Sam Myers reached base on a one-out single, the Sun Devil outfielder then proceeded to steal second. He would be stranded in scoring position, keeping the game at 2-0.

It was more of the same from Carlon, although he had to work around his first baserunner. That proved to not be a problem, as he struck out the side feautring a power fastball and devastating breaking ball.

Third inning
The Sun Devils went quietly in the top half of the inning as Wildcat starter Smith Bailey began to settle in.

In the bottom half of the inning, Carlon insured that Arizona would not gain any momentum. He struck out the first two batters then worked around a two-out single to keep ASU in front 2-0.

Fourth inning
Arizona State's offense struck quickly in the fourth. A leadoff single by Moutzouridis put Bailey on his heels. Smaldino followed with an RBI double to give ASU a 3-0 lead.

Carlon's dominance on the bump continued. Arguably his best frame of the game came in the fourth, as he struck out the side and set the Wildcats down in order for the second time.

Fifth inning
Back-to-back innings PJ Moutzouridis was involved in scoring a run. This time he knocked in the run, as he drove in Garrett Michel, who got on base with a one-out double.

With the Sun Devils in front 4-0, Carlon continued to provide shutdown innings. Despite giving up a pair of singles that got the home crowd to their feet, Carlon calmly stranded a pair of runners and sent a message to the Wildcat dugout in the process.

Sixth inning
The second triple in as many games for Landon Hairston had the Sun Devils threatening again in the sixth. However, Wildcats' releiver Collin McKinney was able to avoid any damage.

For the second consecutive inning, the Wildcats generated offense with a pair of singles. In similar fashion to the fifth, Carlon showed his poise, working out of the jam. He stranded a pair of runners yet again and finished his outing with six scoreless innings, setting a new career-high with 12 strikeouts.

Seventh inning
A two-out Moutzouridis single was all the offense could muster in the top half of the inning, protecting a 4-0 lead.

The game unraveled for the Sun Devils in the bottom of this frame. Walks, an error, and a pair of two-run singles proved to be the difference. Arizona scored seven runs to take a 7-4 lead.

Eighth inning
Looking for a spark, Willie Bloomquist went to his bench and inserted a pinch hitter. Matt Polk came through with a one-out single, but a double play eliminated the potential rally before it could get started.

Right-hander Austin Musso came through with a 1-2-3 inning to keep the Sun Devils within striking distance.

Ninth inning
Arizona closer Garrett Hicks was able to secure his third save of the season, setting the Sun Devils down in order. The Wildcats came away with a 7-4 win to even the series.
