Nu'u Contrades celebrates at second base after hitting a double in the win over Arizona on Thursday, April 2.

TUCSON – No. 25 Sun Devil Baseball claimed the series-opening victory against Arizona on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona State (22-8) has now won their first two contests of the season with the Wildcats of the season, previously claiming a midweek matchup last month. Landon Hairston continued his tear, finishing with three hits including the first double of the season.

The top of the Sun Devil order proved to be key, combing for nine hits, five RBIs, five runs, four doubles, a triple, and a stolen base. A three-run seventh inning sparked by a two-run double by Nu'u Contrades proved to be the difference, providing ASU a lead they would not relinquish.

Four different Sun Devil pitchers combined to limit the Wildcats to four runs. The pitching was at its best when in the biggest moments, shutting out Arizona over the final two innings. Taylor Penn got his first start with Arizona State and went hte first four innings, allowing two runs. Alex Overbay threw the next 2.1 innings, while Sean Fitzpatrick handled the next 1.2 frames. Derek Schaefer secured his fifth save of the season as the Sun Devils moved to 3-1 on the road in the Big 12.

Turning point
After taking the lead on two different occasions only to relinquish it, the Sun Devils finally went ahead for good in the seventh. The reason was a RBI single from Dean Toigo, who gave ASU the 4-3 lead. He scored Landon Hairston, who had started the inning off with a single. The table was set for Nu'u Contrades to provide insurance for the Sun Devils.

Big moment
Arizona State had all the momentum thanks to a Dean Toigo run-scoring single that gave the Sun Devils a 4-3 lead in the seventh. Nu'u Contrades followed with arguably the biggest hit of the game, a two-run double down the left field line to make it 6-3 ASU. It proved to be the difference in a 6-4 victory. It was the second double of the game for Contrades, who continues to enjoy success against the Wildcats.

Final straw
Arizona threatened in both the eighth and ninth inning, attempting rallies to cut into the 6-4 Sun Devil lead. Both Sean Fitzpatrick and Derek Schaefer were up to the challenge, handling the Wildcat comeback effort. Fitzpatrick got out of a jam in the eighth following an error, stranding a runner on second. Schaefer did not let a pair of hits effect him, as he left runners on the corners to end the game. Schaefer blew Dom Rodriguez away with three pitches to notch his fifth save of the year.

The big number
47 - Thanks to his double and triple tonight, Landon Hairston now has 47 extra base hits over his last 57 games. He had just one in his first 27 games as a Sun Devil.

He came up with a couple really big hits today, including the two-RBI double down the left field line in the seventh to put us up for good. It is great to have his bat in the lineup.

Coach Bloomquist on Nu'u Contrades

Inning by inning
First inning
It did not take long for Arizona State to get on the board and establish a lead. Landon Hairston started the game off with a triple down the right field line, immediately sparking a scoring threat. He was brought in on a sacrifice fly from the next batter Austen Roellig, giving ASU a 1-0 lead. Two more hits followed, but ASU was unable to generate any more runs.

Taylor Penn got the start on the mound, the first of his Sun Devil career. He had an efficent first inning, retiring the Wildcats in order on just eight pitches.

Second inning
After the first two batters of the inning were retired, the nine hitter Sam Myers started a rally out of nothing. A two-out single turned into a run scoring opportunity, as Landon Hairston stepped up to the plate. He ripped a double to right field that scored Myers and gave ASU a 2-0 lead.

Arizona generated their first offense of the game in the second, scoring a pair of runs with two outs to tie the game at two. Penn finished the inning with a punch out to limit the damage.

Third inning
For the third consecutive inning, the Sun Devils scored a run. This run helped them regain the lead. Dean Toigo led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Garrett Michel brought him in with a sacrifice fly, putting ASU back in front 3-2.

A pair of singles by the Wildcats created a scoring chance for the home side in the bottom half of the frame. Penn was able to calmly work out of it, getting the Arizona cleanup hitter to fly out with two runners on.

Fourth inning
Both teams were held scoreless in the inning for the first time. It turned out to be the last inning for Penn, who provided four innings of solid work in his first start as a Sun Devil.

Fifth inning
The Sun Devils were unable to score in the top half and then made their first call to the bullpen. Alex Overbay relieved Penn and proceeded to throw a scoreless inning, retiring the Wildcats in order.

Sixth inning
ASU's offense was held off the board for a third-straight inning, opening the door for the Wildcats to even things up. A two-out single from the nine-hole hitter off Overbay knotted the game at three.

Seventh inning
As has proven to be true all season, the Sun Devil offense is hard to contain. They posted yet another crooked number in the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 6-3 lead on the road. Dean Toigo provided the initial lead with a run-scoring single, followed by a Contrades two-run double to double-up the Wildcats.

Overbay retired one batter in the seventh before giving way to Sean Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick settled in after a walk to the first batter and a hit that allowed an inherited runner to score. However, that would be all that Arizona would be able to muster against the senior left-hander.

Eighth inning
ASU went down in order in the top half of the eighth and Sean Fitzpatrick got the call once again on the bump. He came through with a fantastic eighth inning, working around a one-out error to keep the ASU lead at 6-4.

Ninth inning
The Sun Devils got a pair of baserunners in the final frame, but were unable to add insurance runs. Closer Derek Schaefer was called upon to close the door in the ninth. That is exactly what he did, as he recorded his fifth save of the season. Schaefer got out of a jam after two singles put the winning run at the plate. Schaefer struck out the final batter of the game to secure the win for Arizona State to open the three-game series.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening Statement
“It was a grinder. That was a tough, hard-fought win. We did enough to get it done. We were able to scratch out enough runs early, but obviously they came back and tied it a couple times. We were able to put together a really good rally there in the seventh to put up three runs. They came back and scored again. It was never really a comfortable game. Every hitter that came up was important. Some big at bats to drive some runs in when we needed it. All-in-all, it was a nail-biter until the end."

On playing a close game with Arizona
“Like I told you before the series, through out the records in this game. You are going to get their very best. Hopefully they get our best as well. These are always going to be tough games."

On being part of the rivalry as player and Coach
“How much the rivalry means hasn't changed. It still matters. Every game is important. Every game is a dogfight and come down to the end. The intesity of the games in this rivalry never go away. As a player or a Coach, they always seem to be right down to the wire every time. It feels outstanding when you win, but gut-wrenching when you lose."

On Taylor Penn's start
“I thought he did well. Threw the ball outstanding outside of a leadoff walk and a hit batter. Both of those runners came around to score. I didn't even have to say anything. That was the first thing he said when he came off was 'the free passes got me' That seems to be common in our sport. He threw the ball great. Great tempo and I look for him to continue to get better every time he goes out."

Outfielder Landon Hairston
On being named Golden Spikes National Player of the Week
“It feels good to be honored like that on a national level. It’s always a blessing to have that. I feel good about it, but it's a new week and a new start. We’ve got a big series this weekend, so I'm focusing on that and giving my best.”

On adjusting as pitchers change their approach
“I’m just trying to stay within myself and trying not to play into their game. I did that a lot last year when a team started to figure out what my weaknesses were. I tried to play into their game and swing at what they wanted me to swing at, so I’m trying to focus on what I want and sticking to that.”

Pitcher Sean Fitzpatrick
On his performance
“I didn't really have my best stuff tonight, but I am proud of the way I competed. Landon picked me up with a great catch in left to start me off in the eighth. Huge to just get the first guy out. Proud of how we competed as a team today."

On what the team can learn from the West Virginia series
“Each game is so important. It doesn't matter that we won tonight. We still have to show up tomorrow and execute our gameplan. It is nice to start the weekend off with a win. Now we can just go out and compete to try and win one tomorrow."

On playing Arizona on the road
“It is fun. Any time you can go to someone else's ballpark and beat them, that is pretty fun. It is nice that we get the three games down here. Our goal is to win the series."

Infielder Nu'u Contrades
On his comeback from injury
“I always want to come out here and give 100-percent and give a hard 90 (feet). But I have had to ease my way back and not try and push it too hard or too early. My goal is to slowly upgrade the intensity."

On the team's approach coming into the game
“Our approach every game is to stay right center and drive the ball the other way. Especially tonight when the ball really wasn't flying. That was our approach, to hit it hard and find a gap."

On the top of the order producing runs
“Having guys that hit in front of you that can get on is awesome. Having runners on when you come up every at bat makes it hard on the pitcher."
