Landon Hairston hit his 24th and 25th home runs of the season.

PHOENIX -- No. 25 Sun Devil Baseball’s recent midweek woes continued with a tough 10-9 loss in 11 innings to New Mexico State on Wednesday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

In Arizona State’s third extra inning game of the season in a midweek game, the Sun Devils (28-14) surrendered a late lead, rallied to tie the game and send it to extras in the ninth but couldn’t find the dagger to end things before the Aggies (17-22) plated two in the top of the eleventh and held on for the victory.

Landon Hairston moved into a tie for second in ASU single season school history with his 24th and 25th homers of the season, tying Spencer Torkelson (2018) and Bob Horner (1978) and just two behind Mitch Jones’ school record of 27 (2000). NMSU wanted no other part of Hairston after that, intentionally walking him three times and four times total on the night.

Dominic Smaldino notched the only other multi-hit game for ASU while Austen Roellig had two RBIs.

Jaden Alba was called into action early and allowed the Sun Devils to scratch back from an early 4-1 hole behind his 3.2 innings one one-run baseball and career-best eight strikeouts. Derek Schaefer gave the Sun Devils 2.0 scoreless innings of work in the ninth and tenth innings, retiring all six batters he faced to give ASU the opportunity to walk things off but the Sun Devils couldn’t find a timely hit to avoid the setback.

Turning point
After coming from a 4-1 deficit to take a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning on Austen Roellig’s two-out RBI single - ASU’s seventh hit of the game - the Sun Devils went the final 5.1 innings with just four hits. Twice the team managed to get a runner into scoring position with two outs in that stretch but simply couldn’t find the big hits to take command of the game. After Dean Toigo’s leadoff homer in the ninth tied the game, the next six batters all went down in order with ASU needing just a run to walk things off, opening the door for NMSU to take a late lead.

Big moment
As has been a common theme through the season, a leadoff baserunner came back to haunt the Sun Devils in the 11th inning. In a 8-8 tie, Sean Fitzpatrick struck the back foot of NMSU batter and put the go-ahead run on the bases. Fitzpatrick managed a strikeout to put ASU a double play away from getting out of the inning but Taylor Penn gave up a single out of the pen and a double steal put both runners in scoring position with one out. Penn got ahead with an 0-2 count against the next batter but a single back up the middle with the infield playing in plated both runs and that would prove to be the difference.

Final straw
Hairston reached on his fourth walk of the game - the only UNintentional walk he drew - to leadoff the bottom of the 11th and bring the tying run to the plate. However, a double play quickly wiped that threat off the board. Toigo was struck by a pitch to give ASU life and Contrades got one into the air stream blowing out at Muni that went from what looked like a harmless flyout to end the game to one that carried all the way to the center field wall and was about two feet from tying the game. Instead in bounced off the outstretched glove of the NMSU defender and allowed Toigo to score and Contrades to reach second to put the tying run in scoring position. It mattered little as a Polk groundout to short on the first pitch thrown after a mound meeting ended the Sun Devil rally.

The big number
10 -
Free bases again proved to be a bane to the Sun Devil pitchers with 10 free passes or advances allowed via walk, HBP or wild pitch. Five of those resulted in a run scoring or eventually scoring - easily the difference in the game - and offsetting the seventh game of the season that ASU struck out 15 or more matters. Perhaps even more bizarre is that ASU has lost four of those seven games in which it has struck out at least 15 batters.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 81 of its 142 half-innings with runs this season. . ASU has 47 innings with at least three runs scored, 28 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston extended his hitting streak to 25-consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the nation behind Gonzaga’s Maddox Haley (26).
  • Hairston recorded his 70th, 71st and 72nd RBIs of the season, ranking second in the nation in the category.
  • With 25 home runs, Hairston has retaken the national lead in the category and is two away from tying Mitch Jones’ single season school record of 27 from 2000. He is now tied for second in program history with Spencer Torkelson (2018) and Bob Horner (1978).
  • Eight times in the last 10 games have the Sun Devils fallen behind by at least three runs prior to its fifth-inning at bat, finding itself in a 4-1 hole through the top of the second today.
  • Through the first two weeks of April, ASU had just 11 two-out RBIs over nine games while batting a poor .242 in the process - ranking 253rd and 198th, respectively. In ASU’s last four games post Tax Day, the team has recorded 23 two-out RBIs (third in the country) and is batting .396 (19-for-48) - good for 13th in the country.

Inning by inning
First inning
Austin Musso got things started on the mound for the Sun Devils, walking the first batter he faced on four pitches. A fielder’s choice picked up an out, but an RBI-triple followed to give New Mexico State a 1-0 lead. An RBI-groundout followed to make it a two-run first inning, but after issuing another walk, Musso got a groundout to end the frame.

Landon Hairston led off the inning with his 24th home run of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. The next three Sun Devils went down in order.

Second inning
Musso remained on the mound to kickoff the top of the frame but immediately gave up a homer to deep right field, extending the Aggies lead back to two. Three singles shortly followed that, leaving the Sun Devils to bring in Jaden Alba to relieve Musso with the bases loaded and one out. After striking out the first batter he faced, Alba issued a four-pitch walk to bring in another run for New Mexico State. Alba closed the frame with no additional damage, leaving Arizona State trailing by three runs.

The Sun Devils opened up the bottom of the frame with a walk, followed by a single from Dominic Smaldino to left center to advance the runner to third in scoring position. ASU eventually occupied every base with Brody Briggs taking a hit by pitch. An RBI single from PJ Moutzouridis followed that but Smaldino was thrown out at home, bringing the Sun Devils deficit to within two. The bases became loaded once again due to back-to-back walks, bringing another runner home. A foul out ended the inning, leaving three Sun Devils stranded on base.

Third inning
Alba remained on the mound, striking out the first batter before allowing a solo shot to right, giving the Aggies  5-3 advantage. Back-to-back strikeouts followed to close out the frame.

After two quick outs opened the bottom of the inning, Smaldino caught the ball at the center of the bat for a deep left-field homer, cutting the Aggies lead down to one. A groundout followed that, ending the inning.

Fourth inning
Back on the mound, Alba struck out the first batter before issuing a walk. A double play followed, clearing the bases, and closing the frame.

After Beckett Zavorek led off the game with a single, Hairston crushed another home run to right field, giving the Sun Devils a 6-5 lead. A flyout and a groundout followed to end the inning.

Fifth inning
After Alba picked up his seventh strikeout of the night, the Aggies connected on a single to right center. A pop out and a hit by pitch followed, and Alba was able to close out the frame with another strikeout.

The Aggies retired the batters in order to end the inning. The Sun Devils went into the sixth inning holding onto a one-run lead.

Sixth inning
Colby Guy was the next man up for Arizona State, tossing a 1-2-3 inning with a foul out, strikeout, and flyout.

Zavorek worked a one-out walk, and Moutzouridis moved him over to second with a flyout to left. Hairston was intentionally walked, and Roellig laced a single up the middle to drive in Zavorek, making it a 7-5 game. Toigo fouled out for the third out.

Seventh inning
Alex Overbay took the mound to start the frame for the Sun Devils. New Mexico State worked an early walk, followed by a single and an RBI single, cutting Arizona State’s lead to one run with zero outs. With runners on first and second, Overbay issued back-to-back strikeouts, but the Aggies loaded the bases on a hit by pitch. A flyout to center preserved the one-run lead for the Sun Devils.

Matt Polk got the bat going for ASU in the bottom of the seventh, with a single to short. A double play followed that, leaving the Sun Devils holding onto a 7-6 lead.

Eighth inning
The Sun Devils called on Finn Edwards next. After a leadoff single, he got a flyout to left, but a double down the left field line brought in a run for New Mexico State, tying the game at 7. Edwards was able to get a strikeout, but a wild pitch brought in another run for the Aggies, giving them an 8-7 lead. A flyout to center closed out the inning.

With one out, Garrett Michel pinch hit and laced a single to right center, and Ky McGary stepped into pinch run. McGary moved over to second on a flyout from Moutzouridis, and Hairston was intentionally walked. Roellig lined out to second to end the frame.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer was called upon from the bullpen to kickoff the frame for the Sun Devils. The right-hander retired the batting order with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Dean Toigo was the first man at-bat and delivered with the equalizer, connecting on a moonshot to deep center field. The Sun Devils were not able to build off that momentum, retiring in order.

Tenth inning
Schaefer remained on the mound to kickoff extra innings, tossing a 1-2-3 inning with two groundouts and a popout.

The Sun Devils were not able to get the lumber swinging, as they were retired in order.

Eleventh inning
The next man up for ASU was Sean Fitzpatrick, who hit the first batter he faced before striking out the next. Taylor Penn was then brought in, and he gave up two consecutive singles, allowing the Aggies to plate two and take a 10-8 lead. Penn was able to pick off the runner at first, and then, after another single, got a pop out to send the game to the bottom of the eleventh.

Hairston led off with a walk, but Roellig grounded into a double play right after. Toigo reached after being hit by a pitch, and Contrades doubled to deep center field to bring in Toigo and make it 10-9. Polk then grounded out to end the game.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“I've never been one for shying away from my own responsibilities, and I'm not going to shy away from this one. This is an embarrassing loss. We didn't come out ready to play like I thought we would. We had a good couple of days of practice the last two days. Understood the assignment tonight. We just didn't get it done and there were some opportunities there to win and we just didn't get it done. I'll take whatever responsibility that I can possibly take on this one. This one stings probably as much as any loss that I've had since I've been here. I wouldn't have done anything different this week. We prepared well, we just didn't overly play well. We didn't pitch it well and didn't hit it great. We continued to give them opportunities and free bases, and it bit us. We had opportunities to win late and given all that, we just couldn't come through when it counted to finish it off. So again, I'll take the responsibility wherever that falls upon me. At the end of the day, I'll take any criticism there is on this one.”

On what he made of the pitching in the back half of the game
Jaden Alba threw the ball great. He was more on the front end of the game. Colby Guy was great. Ovi (Alex Overbay) was OK. (Derek) Schaefer threw it outstanding. But when you have your horses coming out to throw one inning like that, you don't anticipate giving up 10 runs. We just have to be better.”

On a potential batting order switch for protection for Landon Hairston
“That's obviously a thought. We have to put somebody to protect him a little bit better. I was screaming and yelling a couple of times tonight on guys that are doing what they're supposed to do and tagging on deep fly balls and moving up, but Hairston's coming up behind them and that leaves that base open for them just to walk him. And I'm screaming ‘stay there, stay there, stay there’, and they've been taught to tag and not move up when they have that opportunity and that's something different that we were trying to do on the fly. But we're going to have to figure out something. (Austen) Roellig came up with a big hit behind him once but we have to either mix the lineup up a little bit or put somebody with a big threat behind them so they just can't walk him. And if they do, there's going to be somebody behind them that can make them pay. So we'll have to look at that obviously moving forward.”
