Matt Polk celebrates with teammates after delivering the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 14-13 victory for Arizona State over Utah on Saturday, April 11 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

PHOENIX – No. 20 Sun Devil Baseball shook off a disastrous top half of the ninth inning and earned a walk-off 14-13 victory to even the series against Utah on Saturday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Arizona State (25-11, 8-6 Big 12) entered the ninth inning with a seven-run lead before finding itself in a one-run deficit entering the bottom half of the frame after the Utes (17-14, 6-8 Big 12) plated eight runs to potentially set up one of the most gut-wrenching losses in recent (or even distant) memory for the Sun Devils.

The offense remained unfazed with its extra half inning of work, however, spurred by PJ Moutzouridis’ leadoff homer to tie the game at 13-13 before walking things off on Matt Polk’s one-out, bases-loaded RBI single to force a rubber match on Sunday.

Landon Hairston assumed the nation’s lead in homers with his 21st and 22nd of the season, recording five RBIs and moving within five homers of Mitch Jones’ single-season school record of 27 in 2000. Coen Niclai had his second game-tying grand slam of the week and Nu’u Contrades added a homer as well.

Thirteen of Arizona State’s runs scored via the long ball with Polk’s walk-off single to end the game the lone exception.

Alex Overbay was forced into early relief in the contest and gave the Sun Devils 3.0 innings out of the pen when they needed it most after falling into a hole of four or more runs for the fourth consecutive game. Sean Fitzpatrick and Finn Edwards provided 2.0 scoreless innings of work with four strikeouts and just two hits.

Turning point
The Sun Devils, for the fourth time in the last five days, found themselves in a sizable hole as the Utes jumped out to a 4-0 advantage through the first three innings. There was a serious case of deja vu from Tuesday’s comeback at GCU in the fourth inning, however, as Coen Niclai recorded his second game-tying grand slam of the week to make it a 4-4 game, followed shortly after by a three-run shot from Landon Hairston that jump started an ASU offense that had just five hits over its first 12 innings of action of the series. The Sun Devils recorded six hits, alone, in the fourth inning and the offense would continue to do its part over the remainder of the game.

Big moment
After the Sun Devil bullpen squandered a seven-run lead in the top of the ninth inning and watched, Utah claim a 13-12 lead and threaten to take the series in mind-numbing fashion, it might have been very easy for a lineup that had watched its pitchers throw 232 pitches over the previous four hours to wilt under the collapse. Nine-hole batter PJ Moutzouridis ensured this wouldn’t be the case, recording ASU’s fifth homer of the contest to lead off the bottom of the ninth to immediately tie the game and allow the team a sigh of relief.

Final straw
The Utes were not going to allow Landon Hairston to get his third homer of the game, pitching around him after Moutzouridis’ game-tying homer to put the winning run on the bases. Hairston took second on a wild pitch and Austen Roellig was intentionally walked to put two runners on. Dean Toigo worked a fabulous AB to draw a base-loading walk of his own on seven pitches to juice things up with no outs. A strikeout did put a potential inning-ending double play back on the table but Matt Polk found enough daylight past the outstretched glove of the Utah third baseman to earn his lone hit of the game to earn the victory for the Sun Devils.

The big number
8 - Saturday marked the eighth time this season the Sun Devils recorded the game-winning run in the sixth inning or later - a feat it accomplished 12 times over the course of the entire 2025 season. It was the sixth time in ASU’s last 11 victories achieving the feat. Over the past three seasons and change, Arizona State has won 24 games in which it has trailed by at least three runs at some point in the game. Tonight’s victory marked Arizona State’s 10th walk-off victory over its last two-plus seasons. Entering tonight, when ASU had a potential go-ahead or game-tying plate appearance (7th inn. or later), the team’s .418 average (28-for-67) in the nine games the scenario has occurred was second in the country and that average only went up behind Moutzouridis and Polk’s hits in the ninth tonight.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 70 of its 118 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 42 innings with at least three runs scored, 26 with at least four and 21 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston has 56 extra base hits over his last 63 games after recording his 21st and 22nd homers of the season. In his first 27 games as a Sun Devil, he had just one.
  • The game was Hairston’s 12th-straight with an extra-base hit.
  • Hairston extended his hitting streak to 19-consecutive games.
  • Hairston is alone with the national lead with his 22 homers after surpassing Cincinnati’s Quentin Coats (22).
  • Hairston is the 17th time in program history a Sun Devil has reached 20 homers. He is well on pace to surpass Mitch Jones’ single-season school record of 27 from 2000.
  • Hairston now has 62 RBIs - all coming as the leadoff batter in the Sun Devil lineup in 35 games. For perspective, that total would have placed him second in the nation for the SEASON among leadoff batters a year ago with the national leader - Murray State’s Jonathan Hogart - recording 65 total over 61 games.
  • It is the 14th time Hairston has had multiple RBIs in a game. He now has five or more RBIs in four contests.
  • Hairston has homered multiple times in the same game on four occasions this season (at Oklahoma, vs West Virginia, vs San Diego State, vs Utah).
  • Niclai’s grand slam in the fourth was ASU’s nation-leading ninth of the season. It was his second grand slam of the week.
  • ASU stuck out double digit batters for the 23rd time this season.
  • ASU recorded double digit hits for the 24th time this season and recorded 15 or more hits for the ninth time this season.
  • Six different Sun Devils recorded multiple hits, with two totaling three or more.
  • The 18 hits for the Sun Devils are the most since they had 18 at Arizona in the 15-6 win on Saturday.
  • ASU has now scored 10 or more runs in 14 of 36 games this season (accomplished the feat 17 times in 60 games last season). They have scored at least 14 runs in nine games.
  • Dominic Smaldino finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, the first five-hit game of his career. His average rose from .318 to .343 thanks to the performance.
    • Smaldino’s effort continues what has been a theme in the Sun Devil lineup. Production in the No. 6 hole has been a key to their success. Batters in that spot in the order are hitting .413 (59-for-143) and a .475 OBP.
  • Nu’u Contrades’ home run in the eighth inning was the 24th of his career, as he now sits just one long ball shy of reaching 25 career homers.
    • Contrades also contributed three RBIs, his fifth performance with 3+ RBIs this season.
    • He has 12 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games this season.
  • Sam Myers finished 3-for-4, delivering his second three-hit game of the season. Two of his hits were bunt singles.
  • Dean Toigo finished with two hits and now has two or more hits in eight of his last ten games. He now has 39 hits in his last 26 games (1.5 per game) after having just eight hits through his first ten games of the season (0.8 per game).
  • This is Arizona State’s first victory while allowing 13 or more runs since May 18, 2024 against UNLV.

Inning by inning
First inning
Taylor Penn started the game off for the Sun Devils, giving up a leadoff homerun. After a walk, Penn was able to get a double play to erase the runner. Another walk gave the Utes a two-out baserunner, and the runner moved to second on a stolen base. Penn was able to get a strikeout to end the frame, with Arizona State trailing 1-0.

Despite Austen Roellig reaching on a walk, the Sun Devils were unable to produce anything in the first inning.

Second inning
Penn got back to work for the Sun Devils where he gave up a single. The runner stole second before advancing to third on another single by Utah. The Utes made it 2-0 after the runner at second was caught stealing and the runner on third advanced. No further damage was done as the frame ended on a flyout.

Dominic Smaldino reached on a single before advancing to second on a groundout, however the Sun Devils were unable to score any runs as the inning ended on a flyout to right field.

Third inning
Back on the mound, Penn struck out the first batter before allowing a walk. A groundout moved the runner to second, and a wild pitch allowed the runner to go to third. Utah picked up another run on a single, and a double made it 4-0, Utah. The Sun Devils went to the bullpen, bringing in Alex Overbay, who was able to get a pop out to end the inning.

The Sun Devils went down in order to quietly end the inning.

Fourth inning
Despite giving up a two-out single, Overbay worked a scoreless inning, as he tacked on the final out as he caught the runner stealing.

A single by Nu’u Contrades, Matt Polk reaching on a fielding error, and a single by Smaldino loaded the bases for the Sun Devils. Coen Niclai promptly tied the game with one swing, launching a grand slam. Following this, Sam Myers knocked a single in the infield before advancing to third on a single by PJ Moutzouridis. Landon Hairston then gave the Sun Devils the lead with a three-run blast to deep right center, making it a 7-4 lead. Roellig then reached on a walk, but a double play subsequently ended the inning.

Fifth inning
Overbay returned to the mound and retired the side, striking out two.

Smaldino reached on a two-out double, but was left stranded as a groundout ended the frame.

Sixth inning
After back-to-back singles opened the inning, both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. One run scored on a sac fly to narrow ASU’s lead to two. A groundout got the second out, and a hit by pitch put runners on the corners. Sean Fitzpatrick came in for relief, and recorded the final out of the inning as a double steal attempt resulted in an out at home.

Myers opened the frame with a single, but a fly out and double play ended the inning for the Sun Devils.

Seventh inning
Overbay remained in the game for Arizona State, pitching a scoreless inning.

Roellig got the inning started for the Sun Devils, reaching on a fielding error. Utah then made a call to the bullpen after giving up a single to Dean Toigo. Another single from Smaldino loaded the bases for ASU, but no runs scored after a fly out by Niclai left all three runners stranded.

Eighth inning
Finn Edwards entered the game and gave up two walks and a single to load the bases before Derek Schaefer relieved him. Schaefer was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.

Arizona State continued to get on base with a single from Myers. Following an out on Moutzouridis for batter’s interference, Hairston smacked another homerun to give ASU a 9-5 lead. Both Roellig and Toigo reached base when Contrades knocked in another homerun to extend the lead even further. A new pitcher was brought in for the Utes who immediately issued a walk to Polk, but he was thrown out rounding second on a single from Smaldino. An additional walk was issued to Niclai. Both runners advanced before the inning concluded on a fly out.

Ninth inning
As he returned for the ninth, Schaefer gave up a leadoff homerun. Schaefer loaded the bases with two walks and a single with one out. Three additional runs were scored on consecutive singles, reducing ASU’s lead to 12-9. Colby Guy entered the game for Arizona State, getting a groundout allowing for another run to score. After giving up two straight walks, Eli Buxton came in to replace Guy. Buxton gave up a single, allowing two runs to score, giving Utah a 13-12 lead before the frame ended on a strikeout.

Moutzouridis led off with a solo homerun to tie the game. In the next at bat, a walk was issued to Hairston who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Roellig was intentionally walked. Toigo was issued a walk to load the bases, which led to a new pitcher being brought in for Utah. A strikeout by Beckett Zavorek marked the first out of the inning. Arizona State walked off the game 14-13 on a single by Polk.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“We rallied together at the end and figured out a way to win.”

On inconsistency from the pitching staff
“I'm being very difficult and tough on my pitching staff right now because I demand a lot out of them. And yes, the ninth inning was flat out atrocious, but that stretch from the fourth to the eighth was pretty dang good, right? So right now it just seems to be that big inning where we have a hard time stopping the bleeding. You know, Overbay threw the ball outstandingly. Fitzpatrick threw it great today after bouncing back from yesterday, where he had a walk, hit a batter and another walk yesterday, and then he comes back today, and is huge for us. So the capabilities of our guys are there. It's just the consistency of it on a daily basis is what we have to get to. And that's what's frustrating for me as a head coach, just because I know they're capable of doing it. I've seen them do it. It's just a matter of being consistent. Right now, we're not getting that. So that's what we have to do a better job of.”

On the offense hitting five home runs
“A lot of base runners, which was good. It was a better approach tonight than it was yesterday, and they saved us tonight. So they did a good job coming up with big hits and hitting the long ball tonight, which was good. And then guys in scoring position, Coen (Niclai) with the big grand slam, Landon (Hairston) with the three run home run there, and then another home run later. They're getting guys on base, and they were much better tonight with guys in scoring position. Six of 13 with guys in scoring position tonight. So that was an improvement, but we're gonna grab to keep the hammer down and keep doing a better job there.”

On the strength of the bottom of the lineup
Sam Myers had a great day and laid down a couple of outstanding bunts and got innings going. Between 7, 8, and 9, Coen (Niclai), Sam and PJ (Moutzouridis), there was a huge influence down there at the bottom of that order. I can't say it enough times, those guys getting on base for top of the order is extremely crucial and valuable. So they're not your typical 7-8-9 hitters, but I like having those guys down there to set the table for the top.”

Designated Hitter Matt Polk
On what he felt as soon as he hit the walk-off single
“I mean, it was an amazing feeling to see that ball go through the hole, and I mean it wasn't particularly the day I wanted as an individual. I was 0 for 4 with a walk at that point, so like everything went out the door. It was just about getting the job done for the boys. It was really just trying to get a ball up and, and hit it hard into the middle of the field. I got around it a little bit and got into that sixth hole, and it was just an amazing feeling to come through for the boys. I've been trying to establish myself the whole season and then it's just an amazing opportunity to take that moment and to come through.”

On how this team stacks up against the top programs in the country
“I think our potential is through the roof. I mean, we have the best hitter in college baseball. We have one of the deepest lineups that I've ever been able to be a part of. Once everything gets clicking on all cylinders, I think there's not a team in America that could beat us.”

Infielder Dominic Smaldino
On his mindset going into today and going 5 for 5
“I just hit the ball hard and put a good barrel on it. You get in trouble when you try to hit homers, so I just put a good barrel on the ball and I knew the rest would take care of itself.”

On the goal of putting the ball into play
“I think it's just keeping the approach the same no matter what the count, 2-0, 0-2, you treat it the same, maybe with two strikes you protect a little more, but in terms of pitch selection, it’s about keeping it away from and below the zone and getting the ball up and over the plate.”

Infielder PJ Moutzouridis
On his approach going up to the plate before hitting the tying home run in the ninth
“I mean, honestly, it was a 1-2 count, and I got up on the plate. We preached about two strike hitting, and I was just trying to hit something hard up the middle, and he gave me a breaking slider and I got a good barrel on it, and snuck out.”

Outfielder Landon Hairston
On how he continues to dominate being the national home run leader
“I’m just trying to keep it simple every day. Attack every at bat like it’s a new one, not remembering the past at bat, not remembering the future at bats of what could happen, just trying to be present in the moment and look for a pitch I can hit and. And that's that.”

On if he says anything to himself before stepping in the batter’s box
“Not really. I think I just go up there looking for a fastball and that's pretty much it. I can kind of get distracted in all the situations and people trying to pitch around me, but, at the end of the day, they have to throw the ball over the plate and if they throw the fastball, be ready.”
