TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite hitting a new season-high road score of 196.000, Sun Devil Gymnastics came up short in a close meet at Arizona on Friday night, with the Wildcats earning 196.400 to edge out the win.

Notable stats

  • Arizona State (9-8, 2-3 Big 12) kept it close with Arizona (5-10, 2-3 Big 12) throughout the meet, but the Wildcats had just a bit more in each rotation to creep away.
  • The team score of 196.000 is the highest road score, surpassing last week’s San Jose State quad score. This is the second time the Gym Devils have scored a 196.000 or better this year.
  • The team scored exactly 49.000 on all four events. This is the first time this year that Arizona State has scored a 49.000 or better on all four events. Additionally, this is the fifth-straight meet reaching that score on floor.
  • Senior Kimberly Smith won the all-around title with a 39.325. Her best event was on bars where she scored a 9.875.
  • On vault, juniors Halle Gregoire and Lilia Purler tied for the event title, scoring 9.850s. For Gregoire, that is a season high.
  • Junior Reese Grolla matched her season best on beam, scoring a 9.850 in the lead-off spot after sticking her dismount.
  • In her second bars routine of the season, freshman Delanie Kelly earned a new personal best with a 9.800.
  • Senior Kayla Lee has continued her strong performances on beam after she earned a 9.850. She has yet to score below a 9.800 on that event.

Final results

  1. Arizona, 196.400
  2. Arizona State, 196.000

Rotation one: bars, 49.000
ASU had a slow start to the event with the first three scores not hitting 9.800. However, freshman Kylee Bromley’s 9.825 set a nice tempo for the Sun Devils to follow. Smith scored a 9.875 followed by a 9.800 from Kelly to up the score.

Rotation two: vault, 49.000
Once again ASU struggled to find their rhythm in the early part of the lineup. Two 9.850s from Purler and Gregoire quickly reboosted Sun Devil morale. A 9.825 from Smith also assisted the Maroon and Gold.

Rotation three: floor, 49.000
The second half of the rotation carried the weight for ASU. Gregoire’s 9.800 turned the Sun Devils around followed by 9.850s from Kelly and Smith.

Rotation four: beam, 49.000
Grolla opened up on beam with a 9.850, however a string of 9.775s and below held the Sun Devils down. Lee remained consistent on beam, also earning a 9.850.

Up next
Arizona State will finally return home after over a month on March 15. ASU will host a tri-meet with Utah State and SEMO for senior day. It will be the final meet of the regular season but not the last time gymnastics will be in Desert Financial Arena this season as the Sun Devils will host NCAA Regionals from April 1-4.
