PHOENIX - No. 22 Sun Devil Baseball will look to carry its momentum following a 3-1 week, which included a thrilling 10-inning faceoff with GCU and taking two out of three on the road over the Kansas State Wildcats. Arizona State will take on UNLV in Las Vegas on Monday before returning home to Phoenix Municipal Stadium to face the New Mexico State Aggies on Wednesday. ASU will remain home for a series against No. 17 West Virginia to close out the week.
Arizona State got things started with a thriller over GCU. Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Lopes tacked on two runs. The Sun Devils got their offense going in the sixth with a solo shot from Dean Toigo to get ASU back into it. GCU then added another run in the seventh before Coen Niclai hit a two-run shot to tie things up. Not only did he bring the Sun Devils back into it, but he also clinched the victory for the Maroon & Gold with an RBI single in the tenth inning.
On Friday, the Sun Devils began their series with Kansas State in Manhattan. This game was also a nail-biter, with both teams trading leads and keeping it close throughout. ASU's pitchers totaled 13 strikeouts, including eight from Cole Carlon's five innings of pitching. With Arizona State down 3-4 going into the eighth, they needed something big to help them pull through. With the game tied at 4-4 thanks to Brody Briggs' baserunning on a double play, Landon Hairston launched a go-ahead shot to deep right center to help the Sun Devils get the win 5-4.
Heading into Saturday, it was a high-scoring showdown between the Sun Devils and the Wildcats with seven lead changes throughout the game. With Kansas State leading 11-10, ASU's offense went on a surge in the ninth inning. It all started with Sam Myers hitting a game-tying RBI single to the right side of the infield to tie the game. Ky McGary scored on a wild pitch to give the Sun Devils the lead. With the bases loaded, Dean Toigo took the plate and sent one to deep left field for a grand slam to help ASU to ice the game as the Sun Devils clinched the series with an 18-12 win.
In the series finale on Sunday, the Sun Devils weren't able to get the bats going as the Wildcats took that one 12-1. Kansas State recorded five runs in two innings each, before tacking on one in the third and another in the fifth.
Arizona State will head to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in a one-game showdown before returning home to play New Mexico State in another single game. The Sun Devils will stay home and resume Big 12 play as they will take on No. 20 West Virginia.
The Rebels are coming off a split series against Utah Tech, as they took the first game 11-1 before losing the second game 1-11.
The Aggies are coming off a good week as they went 2-1 in their last series against LA Tech. They lost the first game before winning the last two. New Mexico State will have a couple of days off before they travel to Phoenix Municipal Stadium to take on the Sun Devils on Wednesday.
The No. 17 Mountaineers beat the BYU Cougars, going 3-0 in their series over the weekend. West Virginia combined for 30 runs in the three-game series in their impressive outing against BYU. The Mounaineers will stop in Huntington on Tuesday to take on Marshall before coming to Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Friday for their series against the Sun Devils.
