Series notes vs. Arizona
ASU has won 32 of the last 47 encounters; however, UA has claimed victories in 11 of the last 16 contests. ASU’s 68-61 win on Jan. 28 in Tempe snapped a seven-game winning streak in the series for UA. ASU’s 75-69 overtime win on Feb. 14 in Tucson gave ASU its first sweep in the regular season series since 2018, the same year ASU was last victorious in Tucson.
This will be the fourth time the two teams have crossed paths in a conference tournament. ASU won each of the prior three contests: 66-58 in 2002 (Pac-10 quarterfinals), 68-53 in 2012 (Pac-12 quarterfinals) and 76-47 in 2018 (Pac-12 first round).
ASU’s 81-77 win at home vs. No. 6/7 Arizona in the first meeting of 2022 (Feb. 11, 2022) was the second straight upset of a Top 10 Arizona squad. ASU knocked off the No. 9 Wildcats 66-64 (OT) in the 2020-21 rematch in Tempe (Feb. 28, 2021). The win in 2022 was also ASU’s last win over a ranked opponent.
Arizona’s 58-53 win on Dec. 29, 2019, was its first in Tempe since 2000. ASU swept the season series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2025 and split with the Wildcats in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
January’s contest was a back-and-forth tilt in which ASU’s defense came through in the end. After McKinna Brackens swished a pair of free throws to give ASU a 54-53 lead, the Sun Devils did not allow Arizona to go ahead or tie the score over the last seven minutes of the game. ASU scored the game’s last six points while holding Arizona scoreless over the last 2:13 of the game. Gabby Elliott led all players with 22 points, while McKinna Brackens (13 points/10 rebounds) and Heloisa Carrera (12 points/10 rebounds) both posted double-doubles.
Last month, Brackens scored 24 points with 19 coming in the second half (10 points) and overtime (nine points) to lead ASU to a come-from-behind 75-69 OT win. Brackens’ brilliance was responsible for sending the game into overtime, hitting a jumper from just inside the free-throw line with 3.3 seconds remaining, 40 seconds after Arizona went ahead 61-57. Brackens also had seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Sun Devils vs. ranked teams The Sun Devils played four ranked teams this season, all four contests coming on the road. After losing their first encounter against a ranked foe, 77-46 at No. 13 TCU (Jan. 11), the Sun Devils nearly came away with upsets at No. 22 West Virginia (Jan. 21), at No. 15 Baylor (Jan. 7) and at No. 20 Texas Tech (Mar. 1). In boxing parlance, it would not be exaggerating to say they landed some powerful blows that had their opponent on the ropes in each game.
At West Virginia: ASU led by as many as eight points late in the third quarter and was tied at 41-41 in the final frame before the Mountaineers went on a 12-2 run in the final 2:45 of the game to claim the win. The 53 points West Virginia scored were at the time 25.6 points below its scoring average and remained its second-lowest point total of the season.
At Baylor: In ASU’s 67-64 loss at No. 15 Baylor, it had the ball in the closing seconds with a chance to send the game to overtime. ASU held Baylor to its third-lowest point total of the season at home, its fewest 3-pointers at home (4) and its lowest 3FG shooting percentage at home (19.0 pct./4-21).
At Texas Tech: The Sun Devils held the Lady Raiders to their fewest points (58) and field goals made (18) of the season. TTU’s 58 points were 14.6 points below its season average of 72.6 points per game and 16.6 points below its season average of 74.6 points per game at home, where it finished 15-2 this season. The 21 turnovers ASU forced were the most by Texas Tech in a home game, and its points (58), field goals made (18), and final rebound total (30) were all season lows at home. ASU was up 27-25 and led by as many as five points in the third quarter in a game where points did not come easily.
