Landon Hairston celebrates his grand slam against UConn.

PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball picked up its first midweek win of the season, dismantling UConn in a Tuesday night rout, 17-7.

Arizona State (4-0) poured it on, winning  on the back of a full-team effort that saw the offense produce 17 hits and four home runs, while the pitching struck out 14 and only gave up three extra base hits.

Starting pitcher Kole Klecker set the tone early, striking out four through the first two frames. The Sun Devil batters responded with a two-run home run from Dominic Longo in the second.

Landon Hairston had seven RBIs in the contest, including a grand slam, while Dominic Longo came a triple short of the cycle.

From there, the bats came alive, batting around in the fourth and putting up an eight-spot. ASU tacked on four in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Klecker continued to dominate on the mound, giving up only one run on two hits in his five innings of work. He also struck out seven.

“It was outstanding. We needed it. He had a couple of big hits there, a double with three runs, and then, of course, the slam there as well. But Landon's gonna have big days for us. He's had big days in the past. That’s not gonna be the last one he has. I don't think so. Again, just sticking to his approach, doing what he does best, got a pitch up in the zone and didn't miss it.”

Turning point
In the top of the fourth, with the Sun Devils leading by two, Klecker gave up a home run to the Huskies to cut the lead in half. However, Klecker stayed calm on the mound and struck out the next two batters he faced to shut down any hopes of a big inning from UConn.

Big moment
Right after they saw their lead cut to one, the Sun Devils went to work, sending 12 to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and scoring eight runs. Nu’u Contrades led off with a home run to deep center field, and back-to-back doubles from Garrett Michel and Dominic Longo scored another. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and set the table for Landon Hairston, who delivered a bases-clearing, three-RBI double. PJ Moutzouridis drove him in with a single, and after Dean Toigo walked, Contrades came back to the plate and drove in two runs with a single to left field. The inning included six hits and three walks for the most runs the Devils have scored in an inning all season.

Final straw
Just an inning after Arizona State extended its lead to nine, Hairston pushed the lead even further. After three consecutive singles from Longo, Austen Roellig, and Coen Niclai, Hairston delivered the big hit, a grand slam to deep right field, the first of his career. The home run brought Hairston’s RBI total to seven, more than any ASU hitter has had in any game this season.

Inning by inning
First inning
Kole Klecker took the mound for his Sun Devil debut, getting a quick flyout and strikeout. A 2-out single followed, but Klecker was able to send the next batter down swinging to end a scoreless first.

The Sun Devils went down in order to start the game.

Second inning
Klecker produced another scoreless inning, sending the Huskies down in order with two strikeouts and a groundout to second.

Nu’u Contrades got the frame started for the Sun Devils with a walk before he proceeded to steal second and third on a throwing error. Dominic Smaldino was also able to work a walk, but was thrown out on a double play by the Huskies, which allowed for Contrades to score. During the next at bat, Dominic Longo hit the ball to deep center field for a solo home run. Austin Roellig then capitalized on the momentum with a base hit, but was ultimately stranded at first, ending the inning with a 2-0 lead.

Third inning
In his third inning of work, Klecker pitched to another 1-2-3 inning, getting two flyouts and a strikeout.

Arizona State couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the third, with another 1-2-3 inning.

Fourth inning
Following a groundout by Connecticut, Klecker gave up a solo home run, but was able to get out of the inning without any further damage. He recorded two strikeouts to close out the frame, with ASU still leading 2-1.

The Sun Devil bats were hot to start the bottom of the inning, with Contrades picking up a solo homerun to extend the lead to 3-1. Shortly after, Garrett Michel rounded third base on a double and an error, scoring on an RBI double by Longo. The Huskies walked Roellig before giving up a double steal, putting two runners in scoring position. Following a walk to Coen Niclai, Landon Hairston cleared the bases with a double to right field. Soon after, Hairston was driven in by PJ Moutzouridis who reached second on a base hit and fielding error by Connecticut. After the Huskies issued their third walk of the inning, Toigo and Moutzouridis combined for a double steal, before both were driven in on a single by Contrades. This brought in Connecticut’s fourth pitcher of the inning. The inning closed out on a pop up and groundout, with ASU leading 10-1.

Fifth inning
Klecker returned to the mound after a long break, but was able to work a 1-2-3 inning with a flyout and two groundouts.

Three straight singles opened up the inning for the Sun Devils, as Longo, Roellig, and Niclai all reached. Hairston drove them all home with a grand slam to right field, increasing Arizona State’s lead to 14-1. Three flyouts followed to end the inning.

Sixth inning
Taylor Penn relieved Klecker to open the sixth, retiring the first two batters via flyout and strikeout before giving up a base hit. Penn was able to quickly get out of the inning without giving up a run after a groundout to third.

Michel opened the frame with a double to right center before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Subsequently, Roellig hit a two-run homerun. With two outs, Matt Polk singled before scoring on an RBI triple from Moutzouridis, giving ASU a 17-1 lead. A flyout in the next at bat closed out the inning.

Seventh inning
Penn returned to the mound, giving up a leadoff single before picking up two outs via a strikeout and a fielder’s choice. He then gave up a 2-run home run, cutting the lead to 17-3, followed by a walk, but picked up another strikeout to end the inning.

The Sun Devils couldn’t get much going in the bottom of the seventh, as a one-out single from Dominic Smaldino provided the only baserunner. He was left stranded after a flyout and a groundout ended the frame.

Eigth inning
Brady Louck entered the game for Arizona State, where he gave up a walk and a base hit to Connecticut. Both runners on base advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Louck recorded the first out of the inning with a strikeout. Following another wild pitch, the Huskies scored while the other baserunner advanced to third. The runner on third scored shortly thereafter on a single to left center. Facing the next batter, Louck recorded his second strikeout of the inning, before being relieved by Colby Guy. Guy was able to leave a runner stranded at first via a strikeout to close out the inning with ASU up 17-5.

ASU was unable to make anything happen in the eighth, going down in order by a groundout and two strikeouts.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer took the mound for the ninth, where he got two quick flyouts and clinched the ASU win with a groundout.

"I thought Klecker set the tone extremely well on the mound, worked quickly, got us in the dugout so our bats could go to work. Just did a really good job with the tempo and throwing strikes, working ahead. The offense obviously came alive, and swung the bats their way they're capable of. So that was great, able to get some guys in there towards the end of that game, and continue to get those guys mixed in and experienced. Some of those younger guys and some of the older guys need to stay sharp. So all in all, good day."

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist

On the key to the strong offensive production through four games

“I think getting the right players, and then just continuing to stay to our approach, our offensive plan. And we produced a lot of good hitters here at ASU over the years. This is a ballpark where you come in and you're confident swinging the bats and this team's no different. We went out and recruited, in our minds, good players that would come in and fit our mold and our style that we like to teach. These guys are starting to buy into it and, hopefully, starting to get it, because we're going to need these guys to swing the bats as we continue to go throughout the year, and with the arms that we feel like we have. If we can put these things together, we got a shot.”

On the team producing runs in different ways

“That's what the encouraging part is. We're trying to, trying to beat teams in different ways. We're not always going to be able to sit back and crank out home runs. We're going to have to be able to move runners. We have to be able to hit and run, steal bases when the situations present themselves, be smart on the base paths, and execute when we have to. So just trying to add different layers to the game, to where we don't just become one dimensional.”

On Landon Hairston’s 7-RBI performance

“It was outstanding. We needed it. He had a couple of big hits there, a double with three runs, and then, of course, the slam there as well. But Landon's gonna have big days for us. He's had big days in the past. That’s not gonna be the last one he has. I don't think so. Again, just sticking to his approach, doing what he does best, got a pitch up in the zone and didn't miss it.”

On the team overcoming adversity

“We didn't fold. And I guess the biggest takeaway for me is that we got faced with that situation, and we didn't give in. We recognized it. We didn't panic. We strung a few things together. Were we sharp throughout the game with that stuff when we had our opportunities? No, not at all, but didn't waver on it. We kept battling, kept grinding, and were able to push enough runs across to get a win. And learning how to win is sometimes difficult. But in expecting to win, if we do get down early, expecting to win is another acquired taste, if you will. As you kind of get going, you don't flinch, and when you get down, you don't flinch, you keep going, you keep battling. And our guys did that today, so that was a good thing. Good takeaway from today's game.”

Pitcher Kole Klecker

On his first start as a Sun Devil and the explosive offense

“It was awesome. I'll never tell the offense to not score runs. That's obviously a lot of help when you have a lot of run support behind you, but I’m just grateful for the opportunity. I’m grateful to be back home and pitch here. It was an awesome night. I’m glad that it went well, I pitched well, and that's a really good team win.”

On his approach to the strike zone

“I feel like in my process, one of the things in it is to just really attack the zone. I kind of like to say I’m on the hunt all the time. I try not to get behind in counts. That obviously gives hitters leverage. So the more I can stay ahead, the more opportunity I have to get quick outs or strikeouts when the time comes. I feel like I did a really good job pounding the strike zone.”

On pitching for ASU as a hometown kid

“It's fun. It’s a really cool experience, surreal, kind of full circle. If you would have asked me when I was 8 years old where I was going to play college baseball, I'd say ASU. Obviously I ended up at TCU for a couple of years, but it's really nice to be back here. It’s really special. I have a lot of people that are able to come out and watch and support me, so it's been really cool so far.”

Outfielder Landon Hairston

On hitting a grand slam

“It felt good. There was a little bit of frustration early on in the game. I'm not happy with how my at bats went early on, so, feeling the first one is always a good feeling. It was the first Grand Slam in my life too, so I had a little bit of extra excitement there.”

On how his power has improved this season

“I think just being more comfortable with my swing, with my approach and with everything. Last year, I was just battling early on. I was kind of a scrawny freshman, just trying to keep up with the big guys, but now that I've seen a couple of at-bats in there and gotten used to it, I'm definitely more comfortable now and confident in my ability.”

Infielder Nu'u Contrades

On what has been working for him offensively this season

“Really just seeing the ball well. El (Assistant Coach Jason Ellison) has been working on me keeping my direction good, and that's one thing that he's been harping me on. He's just been constantly reminding me just to stay to right center and it’s been working.”

On the hitting approach with runners in scoring positon

“I think the main thing was just to hunt up in the zone. With runners in scoring position and less than two outs, you're looking to drive something to the outfield. That's kind of something that the coaches have harped on us over the last couple of days. So I think we did a really good job at that and kind of cashing in when we needed to tonight.”

Outfielder Dominic Longo

On seeing the offense score so many runs

“It was awesome. I had a lot of fun out there. It was cool to be a part of it. Our offense is a good offense, and when we get rolling, it's lights out for sure, so it was awesome.”

On how the crowd noise affects him

“I like the crowd. I think that it’s a fun experience and a fun environment to be in and I like to perform a lot more when there's a lot more fans there. I think that's just more exciting. So, I mean I loved it. I loved it out there.”
