PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball picked up a series sweep over Omaha in the opening weekend of the season  in come-from-behind fashion with a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Arizona State started off the game rocky with early command struggles on the mound leading to a four-run deficit in the second inning. However, the team was able to rally and keep the Mavericks (0-3) off the board for the rest of the game, while putting together rallies in a few different innings to take the win.

A quartet of relievers out of the Sun Devil bullpen picked up starter Easton Barrett, combining to keep the Mavericks’ offense quiet and giving the Arizona State hitters a chance to get things going. Jaden Alba took the bulk of the game, tossing 4.1 innings, while Eli Buxton, Sean Fitzpatrick, and Derek Schaefer each threw scoreless frames.

Brody Briggs delivered the first big hit for ASU, cranking a 2-run home run to right in the third inning to get the Sun Devils on the board. After a few quiet innings, Dean Toigo added a home run of his own in the sixth while Austen Roellig drove in the tying run with an RBI fielder’s choice.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Sun Devils took advantage of a few free passes and an Omaha error, allowing Beckett Zavorek to deliver the game-winning hit, a single up the middle that scored two.

“He's been great. Beckett's one of those kids. He’s just a gamer. So in that situation there in the eighth, we talked about it, and I just bet on the kid more than anything. He'll figure out a way, hopefully, to get it done, and he put together a great at bat, base hit up the middle. And it was big for him, big for us.”

Turning point
In the bottom of the third, after the Sun Devils had gone 0-6 to start the game, Austen Roellig worked a full-count walk, seeing eight pitches before taking first base. Briggs stepped up next, and after seeing four pitches, got ahold of one and took it for a ride down the right field line, getting the Sun Devils on the board and halving Omaha’s lead to 4-2.

Big moment
Called in earlier than expected, the Sun Devil relievers had a tall order to keep Omaha from scoring any more. They did just that, combining for 7.1 shutout innings and seven strikeouts. Alba was the first to come out of the bullpen, settling down the defense after Barrett’s shaky start. He was efficient, retiring seven in a row at one point. Buxton came next, allowing a leadoff single but recovering to keep the game tied. Fitzpatrick took the eighth and struck out three of the four hitters he faced, allowing only a two-out walk. Schaefer came in to close, retiring the side on 12 pitches.

Final straw
Tied 4-4 at the bottom of the eighth and with two outs, the Sun Devils caught a break after a two-out PFP error from the Mavericks, allowing Briggs and Sam Myers to advance to third and second base, respectively. Following the error, Landon Hairston was intentionally walked, creating a loaded-base situation for Beckett Zavorek. Zavorek singled up the middle to plate Briggs and Myers, pushing Arizona State to the 6-4 lead that would eventually win the game.

Inning by inning
First inning
Easton Barrett took the mound for his first appearance of the 2026 season. He struck out the first first batter he faced on three pitches, but then issued back-to-back full count walks. A groundout to first got the second out of the inning, but another walk loaded the bases for Omaha. A fourth walk drove in a run, giving the Mavericks the early 1-0 lead. Barrett was able to issue another strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage.

The Sun Devils were unable to get anything going in the bottom of the first, going down in order.

Second inning
Barrett returned to the mound where he struck out Omaha’s first hitter before giving up a walk. A single from the Mavericks put runners on first and second, and another single scored Omaha’s runner on second, furthering the Mavericks’ lead, 2-0. Barrett delivered another strikeout, but then issued his sixth walk, making the bases loaded. He was then relieved in favor of Jaden Alba, who gave up a 2-RBI single. He then got the next batter to foul out down the first base line.

ASU’s offense was kept quiet, ending the bottom of the second with the Sun Devils trailing, 4-0.

Third inning
After continuing on the mound, Alba issued his first walk, but struck out the Mavericks’ second hitter. Back-to-back fly balls ended the top of the third.

Austen Roellig led off the bottom of the third, working a walk. Brody Briggs followed it up with a 2-run home run to right to cut the deficit to 4-2. A foul out, line out, and strikeout followed to end the inning.

Fourth inning
After allowing a double to right field to start the inning, Alba settled in, getting the next batter to ground out to short. He then picked up a quick foul out and a strikeout.

Dean Toigo got the bottom of the fourth started with a single, before advancing to second thanks to another single from Nu’u Contrades. A single up the middle from Dominic Smaldino got the bases loaded, but the Sun Devils weren’t able to convert, ending the inning still down 4-2.

Fifth inning
Alba returned to the mound, pitching a quick 1-2-3 inning with two flyouts and a strikeout. The Sun Devils couldn’t get anything started on the basepaths, as they went down 1-2-3.

Sixth inning
Alba headed back out to the mound, where he got a quick ground out before allowing a single. He then induced a double play, as Contrades snagged a line drive, before throwing back to first to pick off the runner.

A homerun deep to the right from Toigo got the Sun Devils within one to start the bottom of the sixth, 4-3, and caused Omaha to bring out a new pitcher. With the new pitcher, Smaldino singled and another single from Garrett Michel helped Smaldino advance to third. Roellig opted to hit a single to third base, allowing for Smaldino to make it home, tying the score 4-4, but getting Michel out in the process. A single from Briggs helped advance Roellig to third, but ASU couldn’t capitalize.

Seventh inning
Eli Buxton was the next man out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, allowing a leadoff single, before picking up two quick outs via a strikeout and a groundout. He then issued a walk, but was able to pick up the third out on a pop out to second.

Hairston led off with a double to right, and moved over to third on a sac bunt from Zavorek. He was left stranded there as groundouts separated by an intentional walk ended the inning.

Eigth inning
Sean Fitzpatrick took over the pitching responsibilities, and threw back-to-back strikeouts before he issued a walk. Fitzpatrick was able to pick up another strikeout, ending the top of the eight with the score still tied, 4-4.

A pitching change from the Mavericks caused two early outs for the Sun Devils, but a walk from Briggs and an error on Omaha’s pitcher allowed for Sam Myers to make it to second and for Briggs to advance to third. Hairston intentionally walked, leaving the bases loaded for Zavorek who capitalized with a 2-RBI single, ending the inning with the Sun Devils leading 6-4.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer took the mound for the ninth, where he got two quick flyouts and clinched the ASU win with a groundout.

“Briggs, he's just overall energy, kick-started us. So the homer was icing on the cake. From an offensive standpoint, it got us rolling a little bit, but just look at what he did behind the plate.

Notables

  • This is the third season-opening sweep and second straight in the Willie Bloomquist era (also swept Ohio State in 2025 and San Diego State in 2023).
  • Omaha designated hitter Tyler Bishop posted a .299 batting average and started all 50 games for the Mavericks last year. The Sun Devils held Bishop in check, as he went 1-for-11 (.091) on the weekend with three strikeouts.
  • During the three-game series, Arizona State pitching held Omaha in check. The Mavericks produced only 11 total runs in three games, batting .240 and slugging a miniscule .300. Omaha had only one extra base hit today (a double) and had one home run all weekend. Last year, opponents slugged .432 against the Sun Devils, which ranked 140th in Division I. For perspective, .310 was the lowest slugging percentage allowed by a pitching staff against Division I opponents last year.
  • The bottom six batters of the Omaha order went a combined 1-for-20 (.050).
  • Arizona State pitching has posted a 76.9 LOB% (best at preventing runners on base from scoring) through three games, stranding 28 total runners on the weekend. Entering the day, the NCAA average was only 61.8%. Last year, the nation’s best LOB% was Coastal Carolina at 75.5%, who was the NCAA Runner-Up.
  • ASU has outscored its opponents 722-442 over its last 77 regular season games - going 53-24 in the process.
  • The Sun Devils stranded 10 Omaha baserunners in the contest after the Mavericks left 13 on base last night, continuing a marked trend of the Willie Bloomquist era in which ASU has stranded an average of over 8.0 opponent baserunners per game.
  • This is the second multi-RBI game for Beckett Zavorek this season, who came through with the two-run single in the eighth inning.
  • Dean Toigo collected two hits, his first mult-hit game as a Sun Devil. He now has 26 in his career, finishing with 25 last year at UNLV.
  • Dominic Smaldino has a hit in each of his first three games as a Sun Devil, including two consecutive multi-hit efforts. He now has 21 career games with two or more hits.
  • Brody Briggs got his second start of the series and proceeded to drive in a pair of runs for the second time. His four RBIs are tied with Zavorek for the team lead. Briggs now has nine multi-hit games in his career.
  • The Sun Devils won for the first time when walking nine batters since a 21-18 win over Washington on May 5, 2024. It is the first time they have held a team to four runs or less since a 5-4 win over Oregon on March 4, 2024.
  • Jaden Alba’s 4.1 innings of scoreless relief marked his longest outing without allowing a run in his career. It was the second time he had pitched 4.0+ scoreless innings in relief (at Baylor last season).
  • Landon Hairston has one double in each of the three games to start the season. He is hitting .385 so far this season with an OPS of 1.044. Hairston had just one extra-base hit through his first 27 games as a Sun Devil. In his 36 games since, he has 17 extra-base hits.
  • ASU has trailed in one point in 57 of its last 88 victories, including today. The Sun Devils have now won 22 games over their past three seasons when trailing by at least three runs at some point in the game (trailed 4-0).
  • Willie Bloomquist moves to 43-14 (.754) in non-conference home games over the past four seasons after going 7-9 (.438) in his first season.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening Statement
“They didn't panic, which was good. It was very sloppy early on. We don't need to go into all the details, other than just a whole lot of walks and a whole lot of standing around. They could have put a statue in the box, and we might have lost there early on, but our guys settled in. Jaden Alba did a great job calming the waters. Offense wasn't stellar today. We got a bunch of base runners, but didn't do a great job of situational hitting, but we did enough to get it done. Took advantage. They had one mistake there on a PFP in the eighth, and we were able to take advantage of it, so we will take the sweep. Obviously, that's a great part, a great way to start the year, but there's some glaring stuff that we got to work on clearly, so we'll get back to the drawing board and back to work tomorrow.”

On Beckett Zavorek's clutch hit

“He's been great. Beckett's one of those kids. He’s just a gamer. He's not going to come out and wow you with overwhelming athletic ability, he just plays baseball, and he's good at it. So in that situation there in the eighth, we talked about it, and I just bet on the kid more than anything. He hadn't had a great day offensively. But some of those times you just bet on the kid, and what's inside, what's under the hood, what kind of motors you got. And it was this no brainer, just let him go. He'll figure out a way, hopefully, to get it done, and he put together a great at bat, base hit up the middle. And it was big for him, big for us.”

On Brody Briggs providing energy to the team

“Briggs, he's just overall energy, kick-started us. So the homer was icing on the cake. From an offensive standpoint, it got us rolling a little bit, but just look at what he did behind the plate. Guys were flat and not to dwell on the walks, but when you walk that many guys early, you got a defense standing around like, ‘Okay, let's go.’ He never once wavered on his energy behind the dish, did a great job blocking balls in the dirt. At the end of the game, had some huge blocks with Buxton out there too, 56 foot breaking balls that spiked, and he blocked them up and kept runners in their position. So just a huge day for him, not only offensively, but also defensively.”

On the team overcoming adversity

“We didn't fold. And I guess the biggest takeaway for me is that we got faced with that situation, and we didn't give in. We recognized it. We didn't panic. We strung a few things together. Were we sharp throughout the game with that stuff when we had our opportunities? No, not at all, but didn't waver on it. We kept battling, kept grinding, and were able to push enough runs across to get a win. And learning how to win is sometimes difficult. But in expecting to win, if we do get down early, expecting to win is another acquired taste, if you will. As you kind of get going, you don't flinch, and when you get down, you don't flinch, you keep going, you keep battling. And our guys did that today, so that was a good thing. Good takeaway from today's game.”

Pitcher Sean Fitzpatrick

On the importance of being a successful leader on and off the field:

“I wouldn't say succeeding on the field matters that much. Honestly, I don't really care how Nu’u [Contrades] does or how I do myself, this is about us winning as a team. At the end of the day, it's great that we both had good weekends, and we did what we're supposed to to help us win, but that's it at the end of the day, right? We’re trying to win games.”

On the momentum the team gets from a home opening sweep:

“I think it's good. Again, kind of what [Head Coach Bloomquist] said yesterday, I'll reiterate it. It's great that we're 3-0, but we're not where we need to be, as a team and how we're playing. So, we're very excited to be able to get back after it and get better and keep working to get to where we want to go.”

Infielder Beckett Zavorek

On his eighth inning 2-RBI single:
“It felt great just to finally break open and get ahead in the game. We were playing from behind all game, but it just shows the toughness we have as a team and how we're never out of the game.”

On the depth of the lineup:
“I think we complement each other nicely, so we're never out of a game. We're always a couple of hits away from being back in it.”

Catcher Brody Briggs

On the importance of clicking with other catchers, like Coen Niclai:
“It's huge. It's huge for me to come out and him to go in, and it kind of be seamless. We're going to obviously need that later in the year. And [Cooper] Clouser too, he came in and made a big play and looked comfortable. So, to have all of us fire on all cylinders is big.”

On having five different pitchers throughout the game:
“I think guys are just struggling to find the zone early. So I guess my job was to try to calm them down. It wasn't great, but we made it happen at the end.”
