TEMPE - Arizona State Men’s Basketball faces off with Texas in the first round of the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational, hosted at Lahaina Civic Center.

For the first time since 2007, the Sun Devils (4-1) will compete in the historic Maui Invitational. They face a familiar foe in their return, drawing the Longhorns (4-1) who are now out of the SEC. It is another opportunity for a marquee win in a neutral-site contest under Bobby Hurley. The two sides will play the final game of the first round, scheduled for 9:30 p.m. MST and airing live on ESPN2.

The matchup
Arizona State and Texas will match up for the 6th time, with the Longhorns holding a 4-1 edge in the series. The last meeting between the two sides came on March 20, 2014 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. ASU has yet to beat Texas in three neutral site meetings. Texas Head Coach Sean Miller and Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley faced off 33 times when Miller was at the helm in Tucson.

How to follow
The broadcast of Sun Devil Men’s Basketball’s game on Monday will air on ESPN2 when they take on Texas at Lahaina Civic Center, scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. MST tip-off with Kanoa Leahy and Sean Farnham on the call. Quotable

“I feel like we showed what a team is. Through ups and downs, we didn't pout. Basketball is a game of runs, don't let them sustain their run and let's make ours." - Moe Odum on Thursday's win over Hawai'i

History at the Maui Invitational
The 2025 Maui Invitational will mark Arizona State's 6th appearance in the tournament (1991, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2007), compiling a 9-6 record during those visits, including winning the 1994 Maui Invitational with Bill Frieder as head coach in which standout power forward Mario Bennett received tournament MVP honors. During their most recent visit to Maui in 2007, NBA star James Harden led the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record where then freshman guard averaged 17 points/game.

Led by 1992 Maui Invitational co-MVP, Bobby Hurley, the Sun Devils will be one of the tournament's predominant storylines. Coach Hurley will be only the third head coach to lead a team in Maui after winning the Tournament's MVP honors during their playing career (Penny Hardaway/Steve Wojciechowski).

Last time out
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball defeated Hawai'i, 83-76, on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Arizona State (4-1) passed their first road test of the season, handing Hawai'i (4-2) their first home loss of the season (previously 4-0). The Maroon and Gold exploded for 49 points in the second half against a team that came into the game allowing only 61 points per game, a Top-25 total nationally.

Head Coach Bobby Hurley moved to 12-7 in road non-conference games while at the helm in Tempe. The program was a combined 9-21 in the previous 30 years prior to his arrival. ASU also earned the victory after trailing at halftime, the 49th comeback victory in Hurley's tenure.

The Sun Devil backcourt stepped up in a major way, delivering clutch performances to help the Sun Devils erase the deficit and emerge late in the game. Guard Bryce Ford scored a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, making 3-of-5 three point shots while adding two steals. Fellow starting guard Moe Odum took over the game down the stretch, scoring nine of his 14 points after the break. The final piece of the standout guard trio was Anthony "Pig" Johnson, who provided an essential spark with a 16-point effort, 13 of which came in the second half.

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State continued their success under Bobby Hurley in regular season games at neutral sites during the 2024-25 campaign. ASU picked up five neutral site wins during the regular season, which is a new program record. The Sun Devils defeated four teams that won 20+ games in neutral settings in 2024-25 (Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, New Mexico). Three were 2025 NCAA Tournament participants. ASU has won 18 games overall under Hurley in neutral site regular season games. That includes past wins over NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Santa Clara, and UMass.

4-1 start
The Sun Devils move to 4-1 for the second consecutive year. It is ASU’s fifth 4-1 start in 11 years of the Bobby Hurley era.

Seeking a 5-1 start
The Sun Devils are looking for their second consecutive 5-1 start to the season. Should ASU claim the victory, it would be their fifth 5-1 start in the Bobby Hurley era.

Don't count us out
The Sun Devils have come back to win a game when trailing at halftime 49 times during the Bobby Hurley era. The Hawai'i win was the second time that has happened this season. It was the 22nd comeback that came on the road. Since 2015-16, the Maroon and Gold are in the top 40 in the nation in halftime comeback victories. Here is the full list of comebacks.

Above the margins
Arizona State has been one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the basketball. Through five games, they ranke 22nd nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in turnover margin (+2.2). They committ only 10 turnovers per game, a Top-50 total nationally. A big reason behind their comeback win over Hawai'i was a two-turnover effort in the second half. ASU only committed eight total.

The Moe Show
Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum is one of the elite passers in college basketball. He is currently 23rd nationally and fourth in the Big 12 averaging 7.2 assists per game. He is also Top-5 in the Big 12 in total assists (36), steals (13), and minutes per game (33.3).Odum finished with six assists tonight and has now led the team in assists with 6+ assists in all five games of the season. He now sits with 36 assists through five games, which puts him on a 230 pace over a 32-game season. This would be the third-highest in program history, only behind Ahlon Lewis’ 294 assists (1998) and Marcell Capers' 233 assists (1995).

Single season assists record
294 – Ahlon Lewis, 1998
233 – Marcell Capers, 1995

230 - Moe Odum, 2025* (36 through 5 games)
200 – Marcell Capers, 1993
185 – Mike Redhair, 1990
177 – Jahii Carson, 2013
*32-game pace

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 554 assists are the THIRD most. He is the only active NCAA Division I player to have been credited with 500+ assists and have played in 103 games or less.

Active NCAA Division I Players with 500+ career assists
1. Braden Smith, Purdue - 810 assists in 116 games
2. Themus Fulks, UCF - 616 assists in 117 games
3. Moe Odum, Arizona State - 554 assists in 103 games
4. Donavan Dent, UCLA - 526 assists in 109 games
5. Kerr Krisa, Cincinnati - 520 assists in 113 games

Proven Passer
Odum ranks near the top nationally in several significant career passing statistics, an indication of what a successful career he has had. Here is a closer look at where he stands nationally in several important categories:

---> 2.74 career assist/turnover ratio - 2nd nationally
---> 554 career assists - 3rd
---> 5.38 career assists/game - 8th

T-Allen-ted

Graduate transfer forward Allen Mukeba is solidifying his reputation as one of the premier rim protectors in all of college basketball. Mukeba is second on the team with six blocks this season, adding to his impressive career total. He is one of only 42 active NCAA Division I players with 105 or more blocks. Mukeba’s 105 career blocks are tied for the 39th-most of any active NCAA Division I player. He is one of only 19 NCAA Division I players nationally with over 105 career blocks in 92 career games or less.

Massamba making his mark
Freshman center Massamba Diop has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through five games. He is second on the team in points (13.6) and rebounds (6.2), producing at that level in only 28 minutes per game. He also has a team-high eight blocks and is second on the team with seven steals, doing all this while committing only eight personal fouls in five games. He has had at least one steal in every game and at least one block in four of five contests.

Bench boost
Arizona State has received tremendous contributions from its bench through five games. After a 32-9 edge in bench points in the win over Hawai'i, the Sun Devils now hold a 126-78 (+48) advantage in bench points this season. Anthony "Pig" Johnson led the way with his third double-digit scoring output this season. Allen Mukeba added eight points and five rebounds, while Noah Meeusen added three steals.

Pushing the pace
Through five games, the Sun Devils have been one of the nation's best teams in transition. They have finished with more fast-break points than their opponent in all five games, eclipsing 20 points in three of those contests. ASU outscored Hawai'i 17-5, including a 15-0 margin in the second half. Over the past two games (Hawai'i, Georgia State), the Sun Devils have a 44-10 edge in fast break points. ASU is averaging 20.4 fast break points, the 18th-best total in the nation.

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in from San Diego. In the matchup with No. 19 Gonzaga and a formidable frontline, Trouet had 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Only two Sun Devils finished with at least two double-doubles all of last year, and Trouet accomplished the feat in three games.

Defending from Deep
Arizona State has held its first five opponents to a combined 34-of-124 from behind the arc. Teams are shooting a miniscule 27.4% from three-point range against the Sun Devils so far this season. That moves down to 24.4% in the second half off games.

Dialed in from deep
Arizona State's starting backcourt has been extremely effective from three-point range this season. Moe Odum and Bryce Ford are a combined 24-for-56 (42.9%) from deep through five games. Ford leads the team shooting 52% (12-of-23) while Odum is tied with Ford for the team lead in made threes (12).

Non-conference schedule breakdown | Conference schedule breakdown

Constant competition
Bobby Hurley has once again assembled one of the nation’s toughest schedules. The Sun Devils have eight games on their schedule against teams in the latest AP Top-25, including three of the Top-10. ASU could play a total of 12 teams that received at least one vote in the lastest rankings.

Road warriors
Does any team in the nation have a tougher road schedule on paper in the preseason than Arizona State? It would be tough to argue. They have five road games scheduled against teams ranked in the top-16 of the AP Preseason Poll. That includes trips to No. 2 Houston and No. 8 BYU in addition to a non-conference battle with UCLA in Los Angeles. ASU will also face Texas and several other programs knocking on the door of the preseason Top-25 away from home when they travel to the Maui Invitational.

Impact transfers
A six-man transfer class immediately bolstered the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball roster. It is one of the premier transfer classes in program history. Moe Odum finished fourth in the nation, averaging 7.5 assists per game last year. Marcus Adams Jr. was an All-Big West Second Team selection, while Allen Mukeba landed on the Second Team All-Horizon League. Adante’ Holiman earned All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team distinction. Santiago Trouet made a big jump at San Diego a season ago and has three years of eligibility remaining. Scottsdale native Bryce Ford returns to the Valley after a successful run at Toledo. Odum and Adams Jr. were both rated as four-star prospects by 247 Sports.

    The Hurley era

Bobby Hurley has won 172 games in 11 seasons at ASU, the second-most in program history.

    Career wins at ASU
    406, Ned Wulk (1957-82)
    172, Bobby Hurley (2015-present)
    159, Herb Sendek (2006-15)

About those Sun Devil wins
Coach Hurley has notched 172 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 108 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and West Virginia. He added Hawai'i to that list on Thursday. Hurley has now won in a total of 19 different states while at ASU.

Jeff Pendergraph Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
