TEMPE – The first of three road trips this month for No. 3/18 Sun Devil Swim and Dive is set for Friday, Oct. 10, when Arizona State competes in the second annual All-Arizona Invite at 1 p.m. MST in Tucson, Ariz. The meet also features Arizona, Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon.
Similar to the home opener, the meet will not be livestreamed, but it can be followed on Meet Mobile (with a subscription) and the program’s social media accounts: X (@ASUSwimDive) and Instagram (@Sundevilswimdive).
When the meet was hosted in Tempe last year, both ASU men’s and women’s teams were victorious over their three in-state rivals. For the Wildcats, Lopes and Lumberjacks, Friday will mark the first meet of their respective seasons.
Arizona finished second at the Big 12 Championships and had eight All-American women’s swimmers and divers at NCAAs last season. Grand Canyon finished third at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships on the men’s side, and the women’s team finished 10th, respectively. Northern Arizona’s women’s team won the WAC title for the 12th consecutive season.
Ilya Kharun had an impressive showing in the opener against UNLV by setting pool records in 1:37.94 in the 200m fly and the 100m fly at 43.91, which earned him Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honors. Jonny Kulow won the 200m freestyle in 1:34.40 and graduate transfer Remi Fabiani had a strong showing in the 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 18.89.
For the women, Miriam Sheehan won the 100m backstroke in 52.24, which was the second-fastest time in program history. The junior also won the 100m fly in 52.76, which is the eighth-fastest all-time. Freshman Alexia Sotomayor set personal bests in the 100m backstroke (53.24) and in the 200m backstroke (1:55.44). Junior Sonia Vaishnani won the 200m IM in a swift 1:58.67.
Following Friday’s meet, the Sun Devils have a week off, before heading to California for a tri-meet against former Pac-12 foes: California and Stanford. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 24 in Palo Alto, Calif. at 2 p.m. MST, before concluding in Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. MST.
